Yusen Logistics has officially opened a 1.2 million ft² automated distribution centre in Northampton, adding 236,000 pallet positions of capacity to its UK contract logistics network.
The Sustainable Distribution Centre (SDC) sits at Milton Malsor, close to Junction 15 of the M1, giving it direct motorway access to the Midlands golden triangle and the distribution corridors north to Leeds and south to London. The site started operating in June 2026, with the official opening ceremony held in September.
The scale matters for shippers. A single multi-user site with 236,000 pallet positions allows Yusen to consolidate contract logistics operations that would otherwise sit across several smaller sheds, and it targets customers in e-commerce, retail, healthcare and pharmaceuticals from one location. The facility also incorporates dedicated temperature-controlled areas, a capacity segment in short supply as pharma and healthcare clients tighten cold-chain requirements.
Automation stack
The technology deployment includes automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS), autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and four-way pallet shuttle systems. For shippers, that translates into higher throughput per square foot, tighter inventory accuracy and faster order cycles than conventional racking. For Yusen, automation reduces its exposure to labour scarcity — a persistent constraint in UK warehouse operations — across a site expected to employ around 150 people.
The headcount number signals the direction of travel: a facility of this footprint would historically have required several times that workforce. Robotics and retrieval systems are doing the heavy lifting.
Sustainability credentials
The building has achieved a BREEAM 'Outstanding' rating, the top tier of the UK's environmental assessment standard. It incorporates solar power generation, rainwater harvesting and electric vehicle charging infrastructure — features that increasingly factor into tender scoring as retailers and pharma companies push Scope 3 emissions targets down to their logistics providers.
David Evans, managing director of Yusen Logistics UK, said: "The Sustainable Distribution Centre has been developed to meet the evolving needs of customers and global supply chains. By bringing together advanced technology, efficient operations and a highly skilled workforce, we are building a future-ready logistics platform that delivers long-term value for our customers while supporting sustainable growth."
Commercial read-through
The opening strengthens Yusen's position in the UK contract logistics market at a moment when large-format, automation-ready sheds near M1 corridors remain scarce and landlords' development pipelines have thinned. For forwarders and shippers weighing 3PL options, a 236,000-pallet multi-user site with temperature-controlled capacity widens the choice of providers able to handle mixed ambient and pharma-grade volumes under one roof.
The timing also works in Yusen's favour. Healthcare and pharmaceutical customers are re-tendering UK distribution contracts with stricter temperature-validation and sustainability requirements, and the SDC's combination of cold-chain zones, BREEAM 'Outstanding' status and automation positions it to compete for that volume.
With the site operational since June and staffing at roughly 150, expect Yusen to phase customer volumes into the facility through the coming peak season, filling pallet positions across e-commerce and healthcare accounts before the automation runs at full design capacity.
