Key points05

  • Expansion completed 28 September 2026, operational from October 2026
  • Adds approximately 19,300 pallet spaces at the Wrexham site
  • Total site capacity rises to around 33,150 pallet positions, equivalent to 77,000 tonnes
  • First automated warehouse in the UK for Thermotraffic
  • New production area consolidates blast freezing, X-ray, metal detection, labelling, repacking, up-tempering and microwaving at the Wrexham facility

Thermotraffic has brought 19,300 new pallet spaces online at its Wrexham distribution centre, lifting the site to roughly 33,150 pallet positions and 77,000 tonnes of temperature-controlled capacity following a 28 September 2026 completion and an October go-live.

The expansion, the operator's first automated warehouse in the UK, adds a production area that consolidates storage, handling and value-added services under one roof.

What does automation change for shippers?

Thermotraffic said the automated systems are designed to improve operational efficiency and workplace safety, while bringing handling and production into a single facility should help customers cut redundant supply chain movements and flex through seasonal peaks. The company added: "Combining additional storage capacity with handling and production services at the same location is intended to help customers reduce unnecessary movements in supply chains and respond more effectively to seasonal peaks and changing volumes."

The investment lands as European cold-chain demand outpaces supply. UK frozen-food retail volumes have grown steadily over the past five years, while pharmaceutical manufacturers push more temperature-sensitive active ingredients and finished products through northwest European distribution hubs. Automating pallet handling reduces both labour exposure in sub-zero environments and the dwell time that erodes shelf life for blast-frozen product.

What are the capacity numbers?

  • New pallet spaces added: ~19,300
  • Total site capacity: ~33,150 pallet positions
  • Equivalent throughput: 77,000 tonnes
  • Completion date: 28 September 2026
  • Operational from: October 2026

What services sit inside the new build?

The production area pulls six functions onto the Wrexham site:

  • Labelling and repacking
  • X-ray scanning
  • Metal detection
  • Blast freezing
  • Up-tempering
  • Microwaving

For food manufacturers, retailers and pharmaceutical distributors using the facility, the consolidation removes one or more cross-dock or transfer steps from time-sensitive cold chains. A pallet that previously moved from intake to a separate blast-freezing partner, then on to a co-packer for relabelling, can now complete the journey within a single site boundary, cutting handling risk and transit days.

Thermotraffic did not disclose capital expenditure for the Wrexham build or name the automation supplier. Whether the technology will roll out to other European facilities remains unconfirmed, though the operator has signalled further investment in capacity, automation and value-added services in response to growing demand for temperature-controlled logistics.

With frozen-food volumes, tightening food-safety regulation and pharmaceutical cold-chain throughput all trending upward, UK and northwest European operators are racing to add automated pallet capacity. Thermotraffic's bet is that bundling automation with on-site processing will let it capture both storage volumes and the higher-margin services attached to them, ahead of the next seasonal peak.
