Key points05

  • Oceanity won a four-year Petrobras charter for the CMM Purity, built in 2016.
  • The 53-metre vessel has a reported 25-knot service speed and 350 tonnes of deadweight capacity.
  • The financial terms, commencement date and offshore fields were not disclosed.
  • Petrobras first chartered five Oceanity response vessels in 2013.
  • A March 2025 contract covers six hybrid platform supply and oil spill response vessels.

Oceanity has secured a four-year charter from Brazilian state-controlled oil major Petrobras for the 53-metre CMM Purity, a 2016-built fast oil spill response vessel.

CMM Offshore Brasil, Oceanity's subsidiary, signed the agreement covering deployment of the specialised vessel in support of Petrobras' offshore operations. The announcement did not disclose the financial terms, commencement date or specific offshore fields, leaving the mobilization schedule and revenue contribution unspecified.

What does the charter add for shippers?

For container and dry-bulk shippers, the deal adds no TEU or cargo-tonne capacity. The agreement covers an offshore response service, not a cargo contract on a named trade lane. Petrobras gains a four-year commitment to deploy the vessel; Oceanity gets a four-year utilization commitment for one specialised unit.

The deal adds no container slots, dry-bulk allocations or freight rates. For forwarders arranging Brazilian offshore logistics, the relevant capacity is response and support vessel availability. The charter therefore does not provide a new freight-rate benchmark.

What can the CMM Purity do?

The five-ship programme for Compagnie Maritime Monégasque included the CMM Purity, which uses the Damen FCS 5009 design. Its reported service speed is 25 knots, and its deadweight capacity is 350 tonnes. Those specifications support rapid deployment for offshore oil-spill containment and recovery; they do not indicate a cargo allocation to a commercial trade lane.

The vessel's 53-metre length, speed and deadweight capacity make this a mobilization and response asset rather than a conventional cargo-lifting platform. Its commercial function is to support offshore oil operations during spill emergencies, not to add liftings to a freight market.

How long has Petrobras used Oceanity?

The Petrobras relationship dates to 2013, when the Brazilian major chartered five fast oil spill response vessels from Oceanity, formerly known as CMM Offshore. Oceanity has since secured several additional contracts and extensions. The undisclosed commencement date for CMM Purity means the exact end of its four-year term remains unconfirmed.

Petrobras has continued to use Oceanity across several vessel categories:

  • March 2025: Petrobras awarded a contract for Oceanity to construct and operate six hybrid platform supply and oil spill response vessels.
  • October 2025: Oceanity renewed the charter of sister vessel CMM Celerity on a similar four-year basis.
  • January 2026: Oceanity announced a further four-year charter extension for sister vessel CMM Velocity.

What does the vessel portfolio mean?

Contractually, the Petrobras portfolio now links fast oil spill response vessels with hybrid platform supply and oil spill response tonnage. The March 2025 award calls for Oceanity to construct and operate six hybrid vessels, while the October 2025 and January 2026 renewals extend two sister ships for four years each. CMM Purity adds a third vessel on a four-year charter, although its start date remains undisclosed.

With no charter value disclosed, the revenue weight of CMM Purity cannot be compared with the earlier renewals or the six-vessel contract. For Oceanity, the mix matters because the relationship now covers both individual vessel charters and a construction-and-operation mandate.

For Petrobras, the concentration of awards with Oceanity provides a pool of related offshore support and emergency-response vessels across several classes. For freight forwarders, the distinction is mode: the capacity supports offshore operations and spill response, not container slots or dry-bulk cargo volume. The announcement names no port pair, cargo volume or freight rate.

The next disclosures to watch are the CMM Purity's commencement date, its field assignment and the deployment schedule for the six hybrid vessels. Those details will show when the four-year charter and six-vessel commitment become operating capacity rather than contracted commitments. Until they emerge, the concrete result is contracted offshore response capacity for Petrobras, with no measurable freight-rate effect.
