Key points04

  • MISC accepted a letter of award from Petronas LNG for five LNG carriers on firm 20-year charters, expected in service from 2030.
  • The vessels will be built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation.
  • The award doubles an earlier five-vessel programme contracted this year — three 174,000 cu m carriers plus two added in February — with service starting 2029–2030.
  • In August, MISC confirmed an 18,700 cu m LNG carrier at Hudong-Zhonghua on a ten-year charter for the Bintulu–Sendai trade.

MISC has accepted a letter of award from Petronas LNG covering five additional LNG carrier newbuildings on firm 20-year charters, doubling a programme that already stood at five vessels earlier this year.

The Bursa Malaysia-listed owner will enter into shipbuilding contracts with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, to construct the vessels. The ships are expected to enter service from 2030.

The award builds on a separate five-vessel programme agreed earlier this year. MISC initially contracted three 174,000 cu m LNG carriers at Hudong-Zhonghua, then added another two in February. Petronas subsequently confirmed a 20-year charter agreement for all five, with employment scheduled to begin between 2029 and 2030. The new award doubles that programme to ten vessels.

What does the deal mean for MISC?

For MISC, the structure is familiar: long-term employment tied directly to newbuilding commitments. The group has steadily expanded its gas carrier orderbook through long-term agreements with the Malaysian energy group, locking in revenue visibility stretching two decades from delivery.

The pipeline at Hudong-Zhonghua now runs to at least eleven vessels across two programmes, all destined for Petronas-linked trades, plus a smaller unit ordered separately.

In August, MISC also confirmed an 18,700 cu m LNG carrier at Hudong-Zhonghua for a separate ten-year charter serving the Bintulu–Sendai trade — a mid-sized commitment that underscores the breadth of the owner's relationship with Chinese yards and Malaysian cargo.

Why does the timing matter?

Delivery slots from 2030 place these carriers firmly in the next wave of LNG shipping capacity, well beyond the current orderbook cycle. For charterers, that means secured tonnage against expected liquefaction output; for the yard, it extends an already dominant position in mainstream LNG carrier construction at CSSC's Hudong-Zhonghua facility.

For MISC shareholders, the award converts orderbook speculation into contracted employment: ten firm vessels, each on 20-year terms, with service windows beginning at the turn of the decade. The company did not disclose financial terms of the award.

The concentration of business at one Chinese yard also signals where mainstream LNG carrier construction capacity sits. Hudong-Zhonghua, the world's largest builder of the type, continues to absorb repeat orders from national carriers across Asia.

What comes next?

With deliveries scheduled from 2030, and the earlier five-vessel batch entering service between 2029 and 2030, MISC's gas fleet expansion is now contracted through the start of the next decade — and further Petronas-linked awards would extend the pattern of paired newbuilding and long-term charter commitments.
