Samsara opened a free, 50-brand rewards marketplace to professional truck drivers in September, drawing tens of thousands of visitors within weeks and marking the telematics vendor's most direct move yet into workforce retention.
The program, called Driver Perks, gives drivers access to discounts across food and beverage, fitness, wellness, and travel. Partners include 24 Hour Fitness, Audible, Truck Parking Club, Pit Boss Grills, and Better Sleep. Neither drivers nor their fleets pay to participate, and Samsara absorbs the cost on the bet that engaged drivers stick with the platform that delivers the perks.
What did drivers actually ask for?
Kelly Soderlund, Samsara's Head of Insights, said the company expected convenience items to dominate the wish list. Survey results went the other way. Fitness memberships, audiobooks, and travel ranked highest, a pattern Soderlund tied to off-road well-being and family time.
One category caught the team off guard. Strong demand for portable grills and outdoor cooking gear pushed Samsara into a partnership with Pit Boss Grills, a brand most fleet buyers would not have predicted for a telematics-led rewards portal.
How is the program shaped?
A standing Samsara Driver Council, including short-haul, last-mile, commuter, and long-haul operators, supplies ongoing input on category mix and brand selection. That council structure separates Samsara's effort from one-off discount portals and positions the marketplace as a sustained, feedback-driven program.
"It's the first rewards program built for professional drivers that is at no cost to them or their employees," Soderlund said. Fleets see it as a turnkey benefit they can offer without building and managing the program in-house — an attractive framing at a moment when driver pay and benefits already crowd fleet budgets.
Why target drivers rather than fleet buyers?
Samsara's paying customers are the fleets, not the drivers behind the wheel. Soderlund framed the business case directly: drivers hold the adoption decision for any telematics rollout, and a perks portal attached to the dashcam or ELD raises the cost of switching vendors.
"They're the ones who are gonna have to, at the end of the day, be adopting the technology," she said. "They're on the front lines."
That framing treats driver satisfaction as a product-stickiness metric. A driver who values the marketplace has more reason to keep the underlying hardware installed, feed clean data into Samsara's safety scoring, and resist pressure from competing platforms.
What else rolled out in September?
Samsara ran the Driver Cup alongside the perks launch, scoring participants on actual telematics data covering safety, compliance, and efficiency. Winners represented the top 1% of drivers nationally — a sharper filter than the typical fleet safety award.
Award events moved on the ground. Staff traveled to the Tillamook factory in Oregon, then to Crum Trucking in Indiana, where roughly 60 team members gathered to celebrate their drivers. Samsara also placed driver-recognition advertising in Times Square in New York, an unusual media buy for a B2B telematics firm.
What's next for the program?
Samsara framed September as the start of a sustained effort rather than a one-month campaign. National Truckers Day on October 4 sits as the immediate next milestone. The company plans to expand the perks marketplace based on ongoing driver input, continue in-person recognition events, and bake appreciation features deeper into its core product — including in-app kudos and year-round safety milestone competitions.
With Truckers Day and a stated roadmap to embed recognition features into the core platform, the question for Samsara is whether perks-side engagement translates into multi-year driver retention and lower fleet churn.
