The first of three Airbus A321 converted freighters has landed at Western Sydney International (WSI), handing Qantas Freight and Australia Post up to 20 per cent more dedicated freighter capacity just weeks before Black Friday and the Christmas delivery peak.
The A321P2F, which arrived at WSI's freight precinct on 16 October, can uplift up to 20,000 Australia Post and StarTrack parcels on every flight. That payload matters at scale: the extended Qantas–Australia Post agreement, signed in recent months for another 10 years, covers the movement of more than 75 million parcels and other freight items annually across Australia and overseas.
Two sister aircraft are scheduled to join the Qantas Freight fleet by March 2027.
Why the timing matters
The delivery lands squarely ahead of the two demand spikes that define the Australian parcel calendar. Millions of shoppers buying through Black Friday sales and the Christmas season will push parcel volumes to their annual high, and the new freighters will support overnight and next-day deliveries across the country.
The aircraft will serve all Qantas Freight domestic terminals, including the new 24-hour terminal at WSI Airport, which commenced operations in July. For forwarders and e-commerce shippers, the addition means more reliable overnight uplift into Australia's largest consumption market during the tightest capacity window of the year.
The A321P2F also replaces the smaller BAE 146-300 freighters, carrying more freight per flight while cutting emissions and improving network efficiency — a fleet swap that raises per-rotation tonnage without adding frequencies.
A partnership stretching back a century
Qantas and Australia Post trace their working relationship to 1922, when Qantas carried 106 letters on its inaugural commercial flight. The renewed decade-long agreement deepens that history and anchors the freighter investment.
"Australia's freight network plays a critical role in connecting businesses and communities across the country. This investment will help us support Australia Post and respond more effectively as demand for fast overnight deliveries continues to grow," said Igor Kwiatkowski, Qantas Freight Executive Manager.
Mark Davies, Australia Post General Manager Linehaul Fleet and Special Services, framed the aircraft against the structural growth of online shopping. "These new aircraft will help us move more parcels across our network and provide additional capacity at a time when online shopping continues to grow and major retail events are driving record parcel volumes," Davies said.
He added that the freighters, alongside WSI's 24-hour freight terminal, "will help strengthen the resilience and capacity of our network for years to come."
What comes next
The remaining two A321P2Fs arrive by March 2027, completing a fleet transition that lifts dedicated freighter capacity by a fifth. With the 10-year agreement in place and peak-season volumes already straining networks, shippers can expect continued emphasis on overnight reliability rather than new entrants competing on price — capacity, not competition, is the variable to watch through the 2027 rollout.
