Key points05

  • Menzies wins SIA cargo, ramp and passenger contract at Western Sydney International, starting 23 November
  • New 12,500 sq m Menzies facility at WSI can handle up to 200,000 tonnes of cargo annually
  • WSI is Menzies' 11th cargo operation in Australia; company serves 15 airports nationwide
  • WSI's 24-hour cargo precinct opened in July; passenger services began in October
  • Menzies already handles SIA freighter ramp operations in Sydney and Melbourne, plus ground handling in Brisbane and Cairns

Singapore Airlines has handed Menzies Aviation a combined cargo, ramp and passenger handling contract at Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, with operations starting 23 November — and the deal is backed by Menzies' largest cargo warehouse in Oceania and Southeast Asia.

The 12,500 sq m airside facility, announced in April, can process up to 200,000 tonnes of cargo annually. That capacity ceiling matters. It signals Menzies' bet that WSI will grow beyond a passenger airport into a freight gateway competing with Sydney Kingsford Smith for belly and freighter cargo.

SIA's footprint at the new airport includes daily passenger flights plus ad hoc freighter operations. Menzies will cover all three service lines — cargo, ramp and passenger — from day one of the airline's operations on 23 November.

How the timing lines up

WSI's 24-hour cargo precinct opened for business in July. Passenger services began in October. SIA becomes one of the launch carriers, and Menzies becomes its first airline customer at the airport.

The warehouse handles pharmaceuticals, perishables, e-commerce shipments and heavy freight — a spread that reflects where Australian air cargo demand actually sits: pharma cold chains, agricultural exports and fast-moving e-commerce imports.

The operation runs on MACH, Menzies' next-generation cargo management platform, which the company says gives customers better visibility, efficiency and real-time shipment tracking.

What does this change for shippers and forwarders?

Two things in practice. First, a second Sydney-area cargo hub with 24-hour precinct operations and a brand-new facility, rather than the congested infrastructure around Kingsford Smith. Second, a single-handler model at WSI for SIA — cargo, ramp and passenger under one contract — which typically means fewer handoffs and faster recovery when things go wrong on the ramp or in the shed.

For SIA, the arrangement extends a relationship rather than starting one. Menzies already handles freighter ramp operations for the carrier in Sydney and Melbourne. Earlier this year, Menzies also picked up SIA's ground handling contract in Brisbane and Cairns.

The Australia-wide picture

The WSI award makes this Menzies' 11th cargo operation in Australia, on top of air cargo and ground services the company already provides at 15 airports nationwide. Australia has become a dense cluster for the handler, and the Oceania-Southeast Asia region is where it is concentrating capital.

Darren Masters, executive vice president Oceania, Southeast Asia & China at Menzies Aviation, said: "We are proud to be appointed by Singapore Airlines, our first airline customer at Western Sydney International Airport."

He added: "This builds on our long-standing partnership with the airline and reflects our ability to deliver world-class passenger, ramp and cargo services."

Masters also flagged the strategic intent: "Our new airside cargo facility and integrated service offering will support airline growth, strengthen supply chains and help establish the airport as a major aviation and cargo gateway for Australia."

Foo Chai Woo, regional vice president South West Pacific at Singapore Airlines, said: "As we prepare for the launch of operations at WSI from 23 November 2026, Singapore Airlines is working closely with Menzies to ensure we are ready to deliver the high-quality passenger, ramp and cargo handling services our customers expect from us."

Why one contract covers three services

The integrated structure is deliberate. A handler that controls the ramp, the shed and the passenger operation can synchronise turnarounds with freighter windows, and it carries single accountability when a pallet misses a flight. For an airline running ad hoc freighters alongside daily passenger services, that coordination is where margin lives — or leaks.

It also locks SIA into Menzies' WSI infrastructure early. First-mover handling contracts at greenfield airports tend to stick, because switching mid-operation means physically moving freight flows and re-papering approvals.

What comes next

Watch tonnage through the new shed in its first two quarters. If SIA's freighter ad hoc slots convert to scheduled services, and if forwarders redirect pharma and perishables flows toward the 24-hour precinct, the 200,000-tonne annual ceiling stops being headroom and becomes the constraint that shapes the next investment decision.
