Panama Canal lifts Neopanamax draft to 49 ft, sets 33 daily slots

Key points05

  • Maximum Neopanamax draft raised to 14.94 m (49.0 ft) effective immediately
  • Daily Neopanamax transits will increase to 10 starting October 15, 2026
  • Total canal-wide daily slots will reach 33 across Neopanamax and Panamax locks
  • Transit Reservation System remains the only guaranteed route to a transit date
  • Decisions linked to present and projected Gatun Lake levels; water deficit continues in the watershed

The Panama Canal Authority will raise the maximum authorized draft for Neopanamax locks to 14.94 meters (49.0 feet) effective immediately, the Authority said in an advisory to shipping.

The new draft reflects "the positive effect of the close to average precipitation on the Canal watershed and the effective water saving measures implemented in the Locks," the Authority stated.

Paired with the draft increase, daily Neopanamax transits will climb to 10 starting October 15, 2026, lifting the canal-wide slot count to 33 across Neopanamax and Panamax locks. The Authority tied both decisions to "the present and projected level of Gatun Lake."

What does the draft change mean for shippers?

The 49-foot draft restores headroom that vessel planners have lacked since the water-saving era began. Container, bulk, and tanker operators using Neopanamax-class tonnage can now load additional cargo per call. That cuts the number of voyages needed to clear contracted volumes on the waterway's principal Neopanamax-eligible trade lanes, including transpacific and interoceanic services.

For liner networks, every additional inch of draft on the largest Neopanamax boxships recovers tonnage per sailing. Bulk and tanker operators gain similar flexibility on laden tonnage.

How many slots will the canal now sell?

The Authority's October 15 schedule takes Neopanamax transits to 10 per day. Combined with Panamax lock slots, the canal will offer 33 daily transits once the change takes effect — an incremental step toward the higher slot counts the waterway carried before water-saving measures took hold.

Does the booking system still control access?

Yes. The Transit Reservation (Booking) System "remains the only way to guarantee a transit date," the Authority reiterated, adding that "vessels without a reservation may therefore face indefinite delays."

That structure keeps the canal able to throttle traffic if Gatun Lake levels deteriorate, and preserves the reservation system as the binding gate on capacity. Operators and forwarders will watch booking economics as the cleanest read on whether demand continues to outrun the available slots.

What conditions unlocked the capacity?

The Authority tied both the draft increase and the slot schedule to "the present and projected level of Gatun Lake." The advisory noted "the positive effect of the close to average precipitation on the Canal watershed and the effective water saving measures implemented in the Locks."

Gatun Lake, the freshwater reservoir that feeds the lock system, remains the binding constraint on canal operations. The Authority said the water deficit "continues in the Canal watershed," meaning the recovery is partial rather than complete.

What's the trajectory?

The Authority "remains committed to closely monitoring water conditions and rainfall levels and to communicating any further adjustments in a timely manner, as circumstances allow," the advisory stated.

For shippers and carriers, the immediate gain is ton-mile flexibility on the largest tonnage the canal can handle. The next signal will come with the dry-season rainfall outlook and any further advisory adjusting slot counts or draft, which the Authority has committed to issue as conditions evolve through the coming months.
