Flydubai has signed a long-term ULD management agreement with Unilode Aviation Solutions, days after launching dedicated freighter operations with three wet-leased Boeing 737-800 freighters on 1 October.
The deal covers full outsourced ULD management for the airline's passenger bellyhold, its new dedicated freighter operations and forthcoming widebody services tied to upcoming Boeing 787 Dreamliner deliveries. Unilode will supply specialised containers and pallets, maintain and repair them, plan fleet positioning and repositioning, and provide digital asset tracking across its global maintenance network.
For shippers and forwarders in the Gulf, the move adds maindeck capacity at the moment Middle East carriers brace for the Q4 peak. Flydubai framed the timing — Q4 maindeck capability delivered in time for peak season — as a deliberate play for short-haul, intra-regional and emerging-market cargo flows already served by its 98 Boeing 737 passenger aircraft.
Why outsource ULD management now?
The freighter launch marks flydubai's first foray into dedicated cargo aircraft after years of bellyhold-only operations. Rashed Albashri, the airline's vice president of cargo, said asset visibility and equipment availability become more critical as dedicated freighters come online.
"As we introduce our dedicated freighter operations and prepare for our future Boeing 787 passenger and cargo services, improving the visibility and availability of our cargo equipment becomes increasingly important," Albashri said. He added that Unilode's digital capabilities and global network will help the carrier "optimise operations, improve ULD utilisation and support reliable service delivery across our expanding network".
Unilode chief executive Ross Marino framed the contract as a multi-stage play tied to the carrier's fleet roadmap.
"As flydubai expands its passenger network, strengthens its cargo freighter operations and prepares for future fleet development with the expected delivery of its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, our outsourced ULD management solution will provide the flexibility, visibility and operational resilience needed to support every stage of that journey," Marino said.
What does the freighter ramp look like?
The first three 737-800 freighters operate under a wet-lease with UAE-based SolitAir, flying alongside an existing 98-aircraft 737 passenger fleet. Flydubai has said the freighters will deliver immediate maindeck capability in time for the fourth quarter peak, a window when Gulf-hubbed e-commerce, perishables and express volumes spike.
Commercially, the configuration gives flydubai maindeck lift on routes where bellies alone cannot accept oversize or time-critical freight. Carriers and forwarders handling dangerous goods, e-commerce and project cargo from Dubai into Africa, South Asia and the Indian subcontinent should expect more maindeck slots on direct 737F services in the coming weeks.
For charter operators and bellyhold competitors on Gulf-origin lanes, three additional narrowbody maindeck frames add pressure on a capacity pool already tested by peak-season demand.
What comes next?
The Unilode contract explicitly anticipates 787 deliveries and scales ULD repositioning and digital tracking with them. Near-term, the operational question is whether three 737-800 freighters backed by an outsourced ULD pool can sustain Q4 volumes without equipment bottlenecks on high-cycle Gulf-to-Africa and Gulf-to-South Asia lanes, where rotation stress on containers tends to peak.
Both companies have positioned the agreement as a long-term runway stretching into the widebody era, with ULD supply and repair capacity pegged to the airline's fleet expansion. Carriers and shippers should expect flydubai's maindeck lift to expand further as Boeing 787 passenger and cargo services enter the network.
