Key points05
- EPS took delivery of the RS Atlantico, a 5,500 CEU LNG dual-fuel PCTC, and the vessel has left the Xiamen shipyard for Europe.
- Suardiaz Group will operate the vessel under charter on its Atlantic routes, as confirmed at the June launch.
- It is the first LNG dual-fuel PCTC to join Suardiaz's operations.
- It is the first PCTC newbuilding EPS has chartered to Suardiaz.
- Xiamen shipyard, part of China's Fujian Chuanzheng Shipbuilding group, built the vessel as a joint EPS–Suardiaz development.
Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) has taken delivery of the RS Atlantico, a 5,500 CEU liquefied natural gas dual-fuel pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) that Spain's Suardiaz Group will operate under charter — the first LNG dual-fuel PCTC to enter Suardiaz's fleet and the first PCTC newbuilding EPS has chartered to the Spanish operator.
Xiamen shipyard, part of China's Fujian Chuanzheng Shipbuilding group, built the vessel as a collaborative development between the Singapore-based owner and the Spanish operator. The shipyard handed over the unit and the vessel has already sailed for Europe, Suardiaz confirmed.
At the ship's launch in June, Suardiaz said the RS Atlantico will serve the company's Atlantic routes. That placement puts a cleaner-propulsion tonnage directly onto one of the most heavily utilised corridors for vehicle and rolling-cargo flows between Europe and overseas markets.
What does the delivery signal for the car carrier market?
For carriers and operators, the arrival of another LNG-capable PCTC extends a quiet but steady shift in the ro-ro segment. Owners ordering dual-fuel car carriers are positioning fleets for tightening emissions rules and for cargo owners that increasingly weigh vessel fuel choice in their award decisions. EPS and Suardiaz structured this unit jointly from the design stage, rather than pairing an existing newbuilding with a spot charter — a sign both parties expect the partnership and the trade to hold over the longer term.
For shippers of vehicles and high-and-heavy cargo on Atlantic lanes, the charter adds modern, emissions-flexible capacity to Suardiaz's network. Operators able to offer LNG dual-fuel tonnage can serve automakers with reported-sustainability commitments, which increasingly influence contract allocation in finished-vehicle logistics.
Why the EPS–Suardiaz link matters
The deal marks a first on two counts. It is the first PCTC newbuilding EPS has placed with Suardiaz, and it is the first LNG dual-fuel PCTC in the Spanish group's operations. Suardiaz, which runs services connecting Iberian and Northern European ports with Atlantic trades, now gains experience operating gas-fuelled car carrier tonnage ahead of any wider regulatory tightening on maritime emissions.
EPS, for its part, continues to build out a diversified owned fleet spanning containerships, tankers, dry bulk and PCTCs. The Singapore owner's willingness to invest in dual-fuel technology in the car carrier segment mirrors moves already visible in box shipping, where LNG-capable newbuildings have taken a growing share of the orderbook.
The road from Xiamen
The vessel's delivery closes a construction cycle that began with the joint EPS–Suardiaz development and progressed through the June launch. The ship has now departed the Xiamen yard for Europe, where it will take up duties on Suardiaz's Atlantic services.
Watchers of the ro-ro market will look for follow-on orders: if the RS Atlantico performs as planned on Atlantic routes, further LNG dual-fuel PCTC charters between the two companies — and comparable orders from other Iberian and Northern European operators — would mark the next step in the segment's fuel transition.
