Freight services are on track to return to Doncaster Sheffield Airport in Autumn 2027, after leaders agreed a deal to bring the shuttered airport and its adjacent Innovation Quarter employment land into public ownership.

The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), City of Doncaster Council (CDC) and site owner Peel Land have concluded 12 months of negotiations with an agreement for SYMCA to buy the freehold of the airport estate. Formal approval sits with the SYMCA Board on 27 October and, separately, with Peel's board. Passenger services would follow cargo, targeted for Spring 2028, subject to regulatory and operational completion.

For forwarders and shippers with northern England exposure, the deal signals a credible path back to an East Midlands cargo alternative that vanished in November 2022, when Peel closed the field and left South Yorkshire one of the UK's largest city regions with no commercial aviation.

South Yorkshire's Mayor, Oliver Coppard, framed the agreement as a reversal of fortune for the site. "We've agreed a deal that means we're taking Doncaster Sheffield Airport and adjacent Innovation Quarter employment land into public ownership," he said. "This is a deal that puts the future of DSA back in our hands."

Coppard noted the political ground has shifted since closure. "Four years ago, we were told that our airport would be closing," he said, citing "months of negotiations and the growing flexibility afforded to us by the government's devolution agenda" as the factors that made a purchase possible. When the airport closed, he said, "the owners did not want to sell, we had no legal powers to intervene." Approval would make the airport and surrounding land "owned and controlled by us, for us; the people of South Yorkshire."

What does the purchase cover?

SYMCA would become freehold owner and landlord to a CDC lease, covering both the airfield and the Innovation Quarter employment site. Officials pitch the wider package as the South Yorkshire Airport City vision — a hub for sustainable aviation, advanced manufacturing and innovation — with claims of thousands of jobs and private investment. The report going to the board acknowledges risk to the taxpayer given the public funding involved, but recommends approval.

Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, called full reopening her "number one priority" and said public ownership is "the right option for the airport — to get it into public ownership and reopened as soon as possible."

Preparatory work is already well advanced. Airport teams have recruited senior aviation leaders as heads of department, progressed Airspace Change Proposals with the regulator, and made procurement decisions on operational equipment including fire tenders and a new radar system.

What does it mean for cargo users?

No operator names, tonnage forecasts or trade-lane commitments have been disclosed yet, so capacity planning for 2027 remains indicative. Jones said the council has kept "critical conversations with airlines, businesses and support services going," with details to follow "when the time is right."

Simon Hinchliffe, Executive Director of Airport Operations at DSA, said the ownership change "will bring certainty and long-term visibility to our plans and reiterates the potential for the airport to make a highly positive impact on the regional economy and national supply chains." He added that certainty over the airport's future "can only be a good thing for our suppliers, partners and customers as long-term investment decisions are made."

If both boards sign off this month, SYMCA takes control of one of the UK's longest runway-equipped dormant airfields, and the clock starts on a two-year regulatory and operational sprint toward freight operations in Autumn 2027 and passenger flights the following spring.
