David Huck takes over as Group Chief Executive of Peel Ports Group this week, succeeding Claudio Veritiero, who stepped down earlier this month after a five-year tenure.
Huck, who joined the group 16 years ago, moves up from Chief Operating Officer. The promotion sits at the top of the United Kingdom's second-largest port operator — a business generating £820 million in annual revenue and handling more than 60 million tonnes of cargo each year, roughly £13.67 in revenue per tonne shipped.
What did Veritiero leave behind?
The announcement is silent on the reason for Veritiero's exit, and no interim handover period is flagged. Huck himself credits his predecessor with five years of growth and investment.
"In his new role, David will oversee all Peel Ports Group's day-to-day operations, lead our executive leadership team and spearhead the next phase of our strategic vision," said Executive Chairman Mark Whitworth.
What will Huck actually prioritise?
The release points to three planks: lifting cargo volumes, tightening port operations and continuing infrastructure and technology investment. Peel Ports adds plans to expand its terminal network and reinforce its role in UK trade flows — without naming which sites or lanes come next, a gap shippers and forwarders will want closed.
"I am proud to succeed Claudio, who has led Peel Ports Group through a period of significant growth, investment and transformation during his five-year tenure," Huck said.
What does Huck bring from the inside?
Huck spent six years at Hutchison Ports UK before joining Peel Ports, rising to Deputy Head of Container Terminal Operations. He has now spent almost a decade on the Peel executive team, a track record the company frames as continuity for the long-term growth programme.
As COO he ran operations across six ports, 24 terminals and a workforce of more than 2,000 direct employees and third-party logistics personnel. The capital programme under his watch delivered more than £1.5 billion in infrastructure investment — about £25 per tonne against the group's annual cargo base, though the figure is cumulative rather than per-year.
What the announcement does not say
Three items sit outside the release and may matter to shippers, carriers and forwarders using the group's terminals at Liverpool, Manchester, the Thames and elsewhere:
- No financial KPIs attached, so investors and customers cannot benchmark the handover against throughput growth, revenue acceleration or operating margin.
- The £1.5 billion infrastructure figure is cumulative, not broken out by year or by project — current run-rate and focus areas unclear.
- No successor named for the COO seat; the operations function runs under a gap or interim arrangement until further notice.
What to watch next
Watch for volume data on the 60-million-tonne base in the group's next annual report, and for clarity on whether the next infrastructure tranche concentrates on container terminals — Huck's background — or on the bulk, ro-ro and cruise facilities that also sit inside the portfolio.
