DHL Group has raised its full-year 2026 earnings forecast to more than €7 billion in EBIT, up from its previous guidance of above €6.5 billion, after a third quarter in which operating profit climbed roughly 16% year on year. The upgrade, announced ahead of the full quarterly report due November 5, 2026, signals that the freight and logistics giant now expects a robust seasonal peak in the fourth quarter rather than the margin pressure many carriers feared.
The numbers behind the revision are concentrated in one division. DHL Express delivered EBIT of approximately €1.04 billion in the third quarter, up from €692 million a year earlier — an improvement of about 50% in a single year. Management attributed the gain to pricing and cost measures, higher average shipment weights and operating efficiencies, according to the company's preliminary results.
Where the windfall came from
A striking €100 million of the Express division's improvement came from capacity constraints in the air freight market. Tight belly capacity and elevated charter rates have shifted volume and pricing power toward integrators with their own controlled networks, and DHL captured that advantage directly.
Group-level figures underline the breadth of the quarter:
- Revenue of approximately €22.6 billion, up more than 12% versus the third quarter of 2025
- Group EBIT of €1.71 billion, against €1.48 billion a year earlier
- DHL Global Forwarding EBIT of roughly €260 million, up from €195 million
- DHL Supply Chain EBIT of around €300 million, up from €278 million
- DHL eCommerce EBIT of approximately €50 million, down from €176 million — though the prior-year figure included €123 million in positive one-off effects
Strip out those non-recurring items and eCommerce's underlying performance looks broadly flat rather than in decline, a distinction shippers and investors should note when reading the headline comparison.
What does the raised outlook mean for shippers and forwarders?
For DHL's customers, the implications are twofold. First, the company is signalling confidence in fourth-quarter volumes, which suggests management sees peak-season demand holding firm across express and freight networks. Second, the cash is being recycled into capacity: DHL raised its planned 2026 capital expenditure to around €3.6 billion, up from an earlier range of €3 billion to €3.3 billion, with the additional investment earmarked for selected growth opportunities.
The free cash flow forecast, excluding net mergers and acquisitions, was lifted to more than €3.2 billion from approximately €3 billion previously.
For competitors, the Express result is a warning. An integrator earning a €100 million tailwind from air freight scarcity is competing from a position of strength against pure-play forwarders still exposed to spot market rates for long-haul lift. Global Forwarding's improvement from €195 million to €260 million in EBIT shows the asset-light side of the business also benefited, but the gap between the two divisions' trajectories remains wide.
What stays unchanged?
Not every division participated in the upgrade. The outlook for Post & Parcel Germany remains unchanged at more than €900 million in EBIT for 2026, reflecting the structural pressures on the German postal business that continue to weigh on the group's domestic operations.
At group level, DHL now expects combined EBIT from its DHL divisions to exceed €6.4 billion, up from a previous forecast of more than €5.9 billion. Together with the unchanged Post & Parcel guidance, that arithmetic produces the new €7 billion-plus group target.
The market will get the full breakdown — and management's commentary on trade lane performance — when DHL publishes its complete third-quarter report on November 5, 2026. Until then, the trajectory is clear: if air freight capacity stays tight into the fourth quarter and peak-season volumes materialise as management expects, the raised guidance leaves room for further positive surprises.
