The Port of Corigliano has inaugurated Calabria's largest haulage and launching facility, built at the Cantieri Nautici Feraco shipyard through a public-private partnership.
The new infrastructure comprises a slipway and launching basin, a fuel station and a dedicated area for yachtsmen. For naval operators and recreational boating users in one of central and southern Italy's most significant naval communities, the facility materially expands the range of services available at the Ionian port.
The opening marks a deliberate broadening of Corigliano's commercial profile. Rather than relying solely on its industrial cargo vocation, the port authority is positioning the site to capture nautical and recreational traffic alongside existing freight operations.
Officials unveiled the facility during the Mare in Movimento event, which hosted the Italian Jet Ski and Hydrofly Championships. The regatta drew athletes, enthusiasts and industry professionals to Corigliano-Rossano, giving the new infrastructure a high-visibility debut in front of the exact audience it aims to serve.
Strategic planning follows hardware
Paolo Piacenza, President of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Sea Port Authority, described the inauguration as restoring a new perspective to the region and framed it as a further step in the port's development and diversification strategy.
The planning framework is already moving. Piacenza highlighted the forthcoming adoption of the System Strategic Planning Document, which identifies Corigliano as a designated location for recreational boating development. He also outlined planned investments in infrastructure and hospitality tied to that designation.
The Three-Year Operational Plan adds a specific flagship project: construction of a House of Sea Sports at the port. The facility is designed to attract visitors and consolidate Corigliano's role as a hub for sporting, nautical and maritime recreational activities.
Piacenza set out the broader ambition in direct terms. He wants to transform the port from a separate industrial space into a genuine link between the city and the sea — an asset capable of generating new economic development opportunities for the wider community rather than a sealed logistics enclave.
What it means for operators
For nautical operators in Calabria and the surrounding regions, the slipway, launching basin and fuel station reduce the distance to essential maintenance and handling services. The public-private delivery model also signals that the port authority intends to bring private capital and operators into its diversification programme, not simply fund amenities from public budgets alone.
The timing matters for the local maritime services market. With the System Strategic Planning Document pending and recreational boating development formally designated for Corigliano, service providers — hauliers, refuellers, yacht support businesses — now have a policy anchor against which to plan investment in the area.
The trajectory points toward continued build-out. Between the Three-Year Operational Plan's House of Sea Sports and the hospitality investments Piacenza outlined, Corigliano's next phase will test whether recreational and nautical traffic can grow into a durable second leg of the port's business alongside its commercial operations.
