ArcBest posted adjusted earnings of $2.62 per share for the third quarter, 79% higher year over year and 11 cents above the consensus estimate, on the back of a 10% jump in tonnage at its asset-based less-than-truckload unit. The result, reported Wednesday before the market opened, rested on a freight mix that is getting heavier, not bigger: shipments at the ABF Freight parent actually declined 3% while weight per shipment jumped 13%.
Consolidated revenue rose 15% year over year to $1.21 billion, in line with expectations. The adjusted figure excluded restructuring, technology and other nonrecurring costs. The driver behind the beat is straightforward — heavier shipments are lifting tonnage and revenue per bill, and freight that leaked to a once-depressed truckload market is coming back as manufacturing recovers. The Institute for Supply Management's Manufacturing PMI stayed in expansion for a 10th consecutive month in October at 55.5, 100 basis points above both expectations and September's reading. Anything above 50 signals expansion.
What did the LTL numbers show?
The asset-based segment, which includes LTL subsidiary ABF Freight, recorded $799 million in revenue, up 10% year over year. Tonnage climbed 10% as the monthly progression accelerated: up 8.1% in July, 9.1% in August and 11.6% in September. That acceleration is real, but the composition matters. Fewer shipments at much higher weights flatter the top line.
Revenue per hundredweight rose 1% including fuel surcharges, and revenue per shipment climbed 14% — both metrics inflated by the heavier weights. Strip out fuel and the picture dims: yield fell by a low single-digit percentage, dragged down by those heavier shipments and a 2% shorter average length of haul. Contractual rate increases averaged 5.1% in the quarter, a 9.6% gain on a two-year stack. That follows a 5.9% general rate increase ArcBest implemented across LTL services in both business units in June.
The unit's adjusted operating ratio came in at 90.4% — 210 basis points better year over year, 40 basispts better than the second quarter and ahead of management's guidance for no material sequential change. Two cost items cut against it: an annual union wage increase, and a decision to retain more risk on one excess insurance layer. ArcBest said it reduced base liability insurance premiums while keeping coverage limits at a recent renewal, but the retained excess layer has been touched only twice in 25 years — a claim that sounds reassuring until you note that 25 years says little about the next claim.
What does the Q4 guide imply?
October continued the trend. Asset-based revenue per day rose 20% year over year, with tonnage up 15% and yield up 4%; shipments rose 1% and revenue per shipment gained 18%. October tonnage fell only 1% from September against a normal seasonal decline of 3.4%. Ex-fuel yield was again down by a low single-digit percentage, largely due to a 14% increase in weight per shipment.
The company cautioned that weight-per-shipment growth will moderate as prior-year comparisons toughen. It will keep leaning on its dynamic quote tool, which matches available network capacity to available transactional shipments each day.
Normally the unit's operating ratio deteriorates 180 basis points from the third to the fourth quarter. Management expects only 50 to 150 basis points of erosion this year, implying roughly a 91.4% OR at the midpoint — 480 basis points better than a year ago. ArcBest said 2027 should mark another step toward its 2028 financial targets. That is a forecast, not a result, and the guide leans on mix holding.
How did asset-light perform?
The asset-light segment, which includes truck brokerage, beat expectations management had already raised once. Adjusted operating income of $14.4 million topped the revised $10 million to $12 million range given in an August update — itself raised from the initial $6 million to $8 million guide.
Segment revenue rose 25% year over year to $446 million. Shipments increased just 1% while revenue per shipment jumped 24% including fuel. Purchased transportation expense rose 10 basis points as a share of revenue to 85%. Productivity improved: shipments per person per day climbed 8% and selling, general and administrative expenses fell 2%.
The trends carried into October, with revenue per day up 27% year over year on 8% shipment growth and an 18% yield gain. Fourth-quarter adjusted operating income is guided to $7 million to $10 million — below Q3's print, a reminder that beating raised bars gets harder from here.
ArcBest matters beyond its own shareholders: it is one of a handful of publicly traded LTL companies, and its quarterly filings are among the few reliable windows into a trucking subsegment where public data barely exists.
