  • Amsterdam Airport Schiphol joined Pharma.Aero as a strategic member on 6 October at FlyPharma Europe in Copenhagen.
  • Schiphol handled 1.43 million tonnes of cargo last year and offers more than 300 direct destinations.
  • Pharma.Aero counts almost 100 members across manufacturers, certified cargo communities, airports, airlines, forwarders and technology providers.

  • Schiphol cited its cooperation with Maastricht Aachen Airport as a core asset for pharmaceutical logistics.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol joins Pharma.Aero as a strategic member, extending the organisation's reach to a gateway that handled 1.43 million tonnes of cargo last year and serves more than 300 direct destinations.

The 6 October announcement came at FlyPharma Europe in Copenhagen, where Pharma.Aero is participating in the conference programme. The move adds Schiphol to a network of almost 100 members spanning Life Sciences and MedTech manufacturers, pharma-certified cargo communities, airports, airlines, freight forwarders, and technology providers.

What does Schiphol bring to the network?

Schiphol joins Pharma.Aero alongside its cargo community, a strategic location, and close cooperation with Maastricht Aachen Airport. Eduard Molkenboer, head of Schiphol Cargo, framed the move as a direct response to shipper demand for resilient pharma handling.

"Joining Pharma.Aero aligns perfectly with our ambition to work alongside partners in building innovative and future-proof healthcare supply chains," Molkenboer said. "Global demand for reliable pharmaceutical logistics continues to grow, requiring strong collaboration across the entire supply chain."

Molkenboer added that Schiphol aims to "actively contribute to the reliability, predictability, and quality of healthcare logistics worldwide" through its network, expertise, and partnership with Maastricht Aachen.

How does the move fit Pharma.Aero's strategy?

Pharma.Aero Secretary General Frank Van Gelder welcomed Schiphol as a Strategic Airport Member with the connectivity to advance industry working groups.

"As one of Europe's leading connectivity hubs, Schiphol brings extensive expertise, global reach, and a strong ambition to further strengthen its pharmaceutical logistics capabilities," Van Gelder said. He added that the airport's decision "reflects not only a commitment to contributing to our community, but also a willingness to engage, learn, and collaborate with the diverse network of industry leaders represented within Pharma.Aero."

Van Gelder said Schiphol will take an active role in strategic discussions and industry initiatives on innovation, resilience, sustainability, and the future development of healthcare supply chains.

What precedent has Frankfurt set?

Frankfurt Airport joined Pharma.Aero late last year, as reported by Air Cargo News. The Fraport-operated gateway now sits alongside Schiphol as the two flagship mainland European airfreight gateways in the membership.

Denis de Farias Duarte, vice president cargo development at Fraport, said at the time: "As Europe's leading PharmaHub, Frankfurt Airport offers comprehensive expertise and optimal infrastructure to address the industry's most complex challenges. Through our partnership with Pharma.Aero, we are strengthening global collaboration to ensure high-quality handling and maximum reliability for pharmaceutical products."

What changes for pharma shippers and forwarders?

Shippers moving biologics, vaccines, and personalised medicines through Western Europe gain a single industry contact point at two of the region's largest pharma gateways. Forwarders tendering temperature-controlled air freight can now standardise handling protocols and visibility reporting across Schiphol and Frankfurt under the Pharma.Aero umbrella.

The alignment matters most for time-critical shipments where temperature or routing deviations of a few hours can render product unusable. Both gateways already maintain dedicated pharma handling infrastructure and partner on CEIV Pharma operations.

Schiphol's entry is likely to intensify the push for harmonised standards across CEIV Pharma-certified European gateways as biologic and personalised-medicine volumes continue to grow on global air-cargo trade lanes.
