Key points03

  • Swissport has opened a cargo operation at EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse, returning to the French market
  • The bi-national airport serves the France-Switzerland Upper Rhine tri-border region, including Basel's pharma industry
  • Swissport has not disclosed tonnage capacity or staffing for the new operation

Swissport has returned to the French ground handling market, opening a cargo operation at EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse — the bi-national airport serving Basel, Mulhouse and the wider Upper Rhine tri-border region.

The move ends the Swiss-based handler's absence from France, a market it exited years ago, and marks the latest step in a broader European expansion of its cargo handling network. EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse occupies an unusual institutional position: it is jointly governed by France and Switzerland, giving operators access to both jurisdictions from a single site.

For Swissport, the commercial logic is straightforward. The airport sits within reach of pharmaceutical production centres around Basel — home to major pharma manufacturers — as well as industrial shippers in Alsace and southern Germany. Pharma traffic, in particular, demands certified cool-chain handling, a segment Swissport has pushed hard across its network as it competes with CEIV-certified rivals.

The new operation adds capacity to a regional air cargo market that has gained significance as shippers in central Europe seek alternatives to the congested hubs of Frankfurt, Zurich and Amsterdam. Cross-border trucking feeder services can link Basel-Mulhouse into wider European networks, positioning the station as a spoke for freight forwarders routing cargo through Swissport's larger gateways.

For carriers, a second major handler at the airport strengthens competition on service levels and pricing for cargo handling, typically giving airlines greater negotiating leverage. Forwarders in the region gain an additional handling option with the backing of one of the world's largest ground handlers, which operates a global network of cargo centres.

Swissport has not disclosed the tonnage capacity or headcount of the new operation, but the investment signals confidence in demand for air freight services in the tri-border region, where pharmaceuticals, chemicals and precision machinery dominate export flows.

The return to France also fits Swissport's post-pandemic strategy of rebuilding margins through selective network growth rather than volume-chasing. The handler, which restructured heavily during COVID-19, has since focused on stations where it can win premium traffic — particularly temperature-sensitive cargo — rather than competing purely on price.

For EuroAirport, the deal brings a globally recognised handler brand to its cargo apron, potentially improving its pitch to freighter operators and belly-cargo carriers weighing route additions.

Swissport's next test will be converting the new station into sustained volume, with the handler likely to target pharma certification and freighter airline contracts as it seeks to embed the Basel-Mulhouse operation within its European cargo network.
