Air France KLM Martinair Cargo is upgrading the perishables handling centre at Paris-Charles de Gaulle with an automated system, according to Ground Handling International, which broke the news this week.
No financial terms, capacity figures, throughput targets or installation timeline appeared in the GH International report. The carrier has not separately disclosed those details at the time of writing.
What is actually changing at CDG
AFKLMP Cargo runs one of Europe's larger dedicated cold-chain facilities at its main French hub. The perishables centre handles fresh produce, cut flowers, seafood and pharmaceuticals — products where minutes of dwell time translate directly into shelf life and rejection rates at destination.
The upgrade specifically targets automation in that flow: temperature-controlled handling, conveyorised routing and integrated ULD movement. AFKLMP Cargo has not confirmed the technology vendor, scope or go-live date in the GH International report.
Why automation in cold-chain, and why now
Air cargo's temperature-controlled segment has been a relative bright spot across the post-pandemic cycle. Pharma yields have held premiums over general cargo even as overall market rates normalised, and perishables flows through European gateways have recovered to and past pre-2020 levels.
CDG ranks among the continent's three largest air cargo gateways by tonnage, alongside Frankfurt and Amsterdam Schiphol — both inside the AFKLMP group's network reach. That gives the operator unusual incentive to defend perishables share through capex rather than price.
Automation at major European cargo hubs has been a growing theme, driven by labour costs, throughput pressure at peak seasons and the segment's commercial value. Comparable installations at peer hubs have targeted throughput lifts and reduced temperature-excursion events — though AFKLMP Cargo has not published specific targets for CDG.
What shippers and forwarders should expect
For freight forwarders routing perishables through Paris, the rollout matters most during commissioning. Any installation window brings a risk of short-notice capacity reshuffles and temporary service adjustment.
Forwarders should watch for:
- Commissioning windows that could shift slot availability at CDG
- Throughput gains that may eventually expand perishables capacity at peak
- Competitive pressure on smaller European gateways without comparable automation
AFKLMP Cargo has not flagged service-disruption periods in the GH International report.
The commercial read
The move signals an operator betting on continued growth in temperature-controlled air freight, or at minimum defending share against integrated competitors at Frankfurt and Liège, both of which have invested in automated cold-chain capacity.
For shippers, the read is straightforward: tighter, faster perishables handling at CDG should reduce rejection rates and improve slot reliability — both historically weak points in the segment. For competing ground handlers at CDG and adjacent hubs, the message is that capex, not just price, will define the next phase of cold-chain competition.
