Key points05
- Air France KLM Martinair Cargo is automating its Paris-CDG Perishables Centre with Germany's Lödige Industries, per Airport Suppliers.
- AFKL Cargo's CDG cold-chain operation handles cut flowers from Kenya and Ecuador, Latin American citrus and berries, and a growing pharma slice.
- Lödige Industries is headquartered in Warburg, Germany, with airport references at Frankfurt, Singapore Changi and Dubai.
- Air cargo perishables has been one of the few double-digit-volume-growth segments in recent years.
- The next read on whether the system earns its keep will be a winter on-time-performance bulletin covering the first cut-rose cycle from Nairobi.
Air France KLM Martinair Cargo is putting its Paris-CDG Perishables Centre into the hands of Germany's Lödige Industries, according to industry supplier publication Airport Suppliers, with automation set to reshape one of the airline group's highest-margin handling operations.
The move cedes the systems-integration role for one of Europe's busiest perishable gateways to a Warburg-headquartered vendor whose airport reference book already runs through Frankfurt, Singapore Changi and Dubai. AFKL Cargo's Paris temperature-controlled footprint handles cut flowers from Kenya and Ecuador, citrus and berries from Latin America, and a growing pharma slice routed through CDG's Cargo Zone.
Why does it matter commercially?
A perishable ULD that sits on a dock ramp loses money every minute the temperature drifts. AFKL has spent the post-Covid years quietly rebuilding margin by tightening that window — perishables is among the few air cargo verticals with consistent double-digit volume growth, and CDG sits as the European pivot for that trade.
Lödige's pull here is experience on the apron, not the warehouse. Conveyors must clear GSE paths, and any missed barcode turns into a customer claim. The CDG install's commercial grade will hinge on ULD turnaround against today's baseline.
Warburg-based Lödige has spent decades in airside cargo, with references in Frankfurt, Singapore Changi and Dubai. Its apron-side installations are the sort of thing terminal operators don't publicise until they're already running.
What changes for shippers and forwarders?
Short answer: probably nothing immediate. Shippers tendering on AFKL metal should expect tighter SLA language on transfer times, because automation makes it cheaper to promise them. Brokers booking perishables on rivals — Lufthansa Cargo, IAG Cargo, Cathay Cargo — won't see a tilt overnight, but Paris-hub transit-time claims will face pressure.
The practical effect is the one shippers quietly want: less time on the apron, more certainty on the cooler chain. Forwarders read automation announcements as marketing until operations prove otherwise — the early verdict is to wait for the first winter peak. Cold-chain ramps are unforgiving; a ULD off the conveyor becomes a Saturday story for the wrong reasons.
Pharma is the angle to watch, not flowers. AFKL has been pushing time-temperature tagged ULDs for high-value injectable traffic, and automation lets the carrier promise dock-to-cooler windows in single-digit minutes. That is where SLA penalties either show up or quietly don't.
What to watch next
Paris-CDG perishable tonnage has climbed as African exporters seek Schiphol alternatives. The metric to track: whether automation pulls that traffic back through CDG, and at what unit cost. The next tell is a winter on-time-performance bulletin from the carrier, with the first cut-rose cycle from Nairobi the cleanest read on whether the system has earned its keep.
