Key points04

  • YEEP! operates 4,000 parcel lockers across the UK.
  • All new lockers adopt Generation 3 touchscreen specification from 2 November 2026.
  • Existing locker estate to be upgraded by end of Q1 2027.
  • Generation 3 was developed with hardware partner and shareholder kernTerminal AG.

UK parcel locker network YEEP! has passed 4,000 locker locations as it prepares to switch its entire hardware estate to a new touchscreen specification developed with its German partner kernTerminal AG.

The move puts YEEP! squarely into the scaling race for out-of-home delivery infrastructure in the UK, where carriers are under sustained pressure to cut failed doorstep deliveries and consolidate urban last-mile drops.

What changes with Generation 3?

The new Generation 3 lockers combine YEEP!'s solar and battery-powered technology with a touchscreen interface. The company says the redesign aims to improve the experience for both sides of the locker: delivery drivers loading parcels and consumers collecting or returning them.

All new YEEP! lockers will ship to the Generation 3 specification from 2 November 2026, and the company has scheduled a programme to upgrade its existing estate of more than 4,000 units by the end of Q1 2027.

The hardware marks the network's third design iteration. YEEP! started with battery-powered lockers, then moved to solar battery technology — a shift that reduces the installation constraints and running costs that historically limited where locker banks could be sited.

What are the operators saying?

Alan Barrie, group board advisor at YEEP! and kernTerminal AG, framed the 4,000-locker mark as a checkpoint rather than a finish line. He said: "The first phase of YEEP! established the proposition, built the network and gave us a huge amount of knowledge about the market, the technology and what our carrier customers need. We've reached 4,000 lockers, but there's a lot more to come."

CEO Jamie Dickinson said: "Reaching 4,000 locations is a big milestone for YEEP!, and the launch of Generation 3 gives us another reason to be excited about where the business is heading.

"We've learnt a great deal from operating the network and from our work with kernTerminal, and we've used that experience to improve how the locker works for the people who interact with it every day, whether that's a driver delivering parcels or a consumer collecting or returning one."

Why the hardware matters for carriers

For carrier customers, the driver-facing half of the redesign is the commercially significant part. Locker throughput depends on how quickly drivers can load a bank of parcels at a stop; any friction in the scanning, door-allocation and loading sequence erodes the stop-density economics that make out-of-home delivery cheaper than doorstep drops.

A standardised touchscreen interface across the whole estate — rather than a mix of hardware generations — also simplifies driver training and reduces dwell time for carriers whose routes mix locker types across different networks.

On the consumer side, returns via locker are a growing revenue pool for parcel networks as e-commerce reverse logistics volumes climb, and a touchscreen flow is easier to extend to returns, redirections and multiple collections than button-based interfaces.

The kernTerminal relationship underpins the rollout. The Swiss-linked hardware group is both YEEP!'s development partner and a shareholder, which gives the locker operator a direct line on manufacturing capacity ahead of a 2026-27 conversion programme covering the full estate.

What comes next

The timeline is tight: new-build lockers shift to Generation 3 in November 2026, and retrofitting of existing units completes by the end of Q1 2027. Barrie's signal that "there's a lot more to come" indicates the network intends to keep expanding beyond the 4,000-site mark once the hardware standardisation is done — a trajectory carriers and forwarders watching UK out-of-home capacity will be tracking through 2027.
