XPO now operates 300 terminals across North America after opening service centers in Mesa, Arizona and Cameron, Missouri, the less-than-truckload carrier said Thursday, adding 118 dock doors to a network it has expanded by 15% over the past five years.
The 51,000-square-foot Mesa facility carries 86 dock doors and more than 100 employees, anchoring XPO's play in the Phoenix market. The carrier already runs a freight assembly center there and is positioning for industrial growth and rising cross-border trade with Mexico.
A 13,000-square-foot terminal in Cameron, Missouri — about 50 miles north of Kansas City — adds 32 doors and over 30 workers. The site sits at the junction of I-35 and U.S. 36, giving XPO reach into both the north-south corridor and the east-west lanes feeding Kansas City.
"These new service centers deepen our presence in two critical freight markets and reflect our strategic approach to investing in our network," said Matt Carroll, president of XPO's West Division. "We've added capacity where our customers need it most, positioning us to support their growth while delivering the world-class service they count on."
What does the Phoenix bet signal?
XPO's Phoenix push arrives as the metro absorbs new industrial investment and increased cross-border trade with Mexico, according to the carrier. The Mesa terminal, nearly four times the door count of the Missouri site, gives XPO room to handle freight between the Phoenix market and distribution points elsewhere in the Southwest.
For shippers in the region, the additional doors should translate into tighter pickup windows and shorter linehauls. For the LTL segment broadly, the expansion is the latest signal that carriers are investing through the freight cycle rather than pulling back.
Why the Missouri site matters
Cameron sits roughly 50 miles north of Kansas City at the intersection of I-35 and U.S. 36, a location that lets XPO catch freight moving north toward Minneapolis and on into Canada, and east toward Midwestern destinations. The 32-door, 30-employee operation is small by LTL standards but fits the carrier's pattern of placing terminals close to highway junctions to compress linehaul distances.
XPO's larger network build
The two openings are part of a five-year push that has added nearly 35 facilities to XPO's footprint. Door capacity is up 15% over that span. The single largest transaction came in 2023, when XPO agreed to pay $870 million for 28 terminals from the bankrupt Yellow Corp., reshaping U.S. LTL capacity by handing a sizable share of Yellow's former real estate to the third-largest U.S. LTL carrier.
With 300 terminals now in service, XPO offers direct coverage to 99% of U.S. ZIP codes alongside cross-border service into Canada and Mexico. The carrier is now using that density to win higher-yield local accounts and protect share as LTL pricing tightens.
What to watch
XPO's near-term expansion will focus on the Phoenix region and cross-border lanes serving Mexico, where industrial growth is pulling more freight north. The 28 former Yellow terminals, still being absorbed into the network, give the company room to add door capacity at existing sites — a lower-cost path than greenfield construction that typically yields faster service improvements.
