Key points04

  • WEL Companies announced the Descartes TMS–CARRIER1 Vault integration on October 22, 2026.
  • Brokers manage own-fleet and third-party for-hire freight without leaving the Descartes TMS.
  • Documents transferred automatically include rate confirmations, bills of lading and proof of delivery.
  • No financial terms or quantified performance results were disclosed.

US transportation and logistics provider WEL Companies has integrated Descartes Systems Group's cloud-based transportation management system with CARRIER1 Vault, announced October 22, 2026, in a move designed to consolidate freight brokerage operations and carrier communications on a single platform.

The integration covers both sides of WEL's business. It manages shipments moved by WEL's own fleet alongside freight handled by third-party carriers within the company's for-hire network. That dual coverage is the commercial point: brokers no longer switch between systems depending on who is hauling the load.

What changes for WEL's brokers?

The connection ties brokerage activity directly to carrier and driver workflows. Shipment information, status updates and delivery documentation move between the two platforms automatically. Freight brokers stay inside their existing Descartes TMS environment throughout.

"The Descartes and CARRIER1 collaboration lets WEL automate communication and shipment data across our brokerage, our assets, and our for-hire carrier network, without our brokers ever leaving their TMS," said Eric Lenze, EVP at WEL Companies.

"That means a faster shipment lifecycle and a better experience for our customers," he added.

Descartes' broker TMS handles the core transportation management chain: order entry, load coverage, carrier acceptance, dispatching and carrier communications. The CARRIER1 Vault link extends those capabilities out to carriers and drivers, adding digital freight tendering, shipment tracking and document exchange.

As shipments progress, the system transfers carrier assignments, driver and equipment details, delivery status updates and transport documents directly into the corresponding shipment records inside Descartes. The document set includes rate confirmations, bills of lading and proof of delivery. Brokers keep a single, centralised view of shipment information rather than stitching it together from inboxes.

Fewer emails, fewer spreadsheets

The integration also handles carrier, driver and equipment verification. It cuts reliance on manual data entry and on information collected through emails, spreadsheets and telephone calls — the traditional glue of broker-carrier relationships in trucking.

"Connecting Vault with Descartes' TMS brings the broker, carrier and driver into the same flow of information," said Travis Rhyan, CEO of CARRIER1.

"The broker stays in their Descartes solution, the carrier gets what they need to move the load, and the information comes back without someone having to chase it down manually," he explained.

For WEL, the implementation targets a persistent friction point in freight brokerage: coordination between the teams managing shipments and the carriers actually transporting the goods. By connecting shipment management, carrier communications and document processing, the company aims to simplify administrative workflows and improve the availability of operational information across the full shipment lifecycle.

Why the TMS stays central

Andrew Wimer, Associate General Manager at Descartes, framed the integration as a way for brokers to access specialised capabilities while keeping the Descartes TMS as their central operating platform.

According to Wimer, extending the system to carriers and drivers means brokerage teams spend less time collecting shipment updates and documentation. The freed-up capacity goes toward managing operational exceptions and customer requirements — the work that actually differentiates a broker.

The companies did not disclose financial terms. No quantified performance results from the implementation were provided, so any efficiency gains remain, for now, directional rather than measured.

The deal signals where broker technology is heading: integrations that push data out to carriers and pull it back automatically, rather than adding another dashboard for staff to monitor. Expect more TMS providers to pursue similar embedded carrier-network connections as brokers push to cut manual coordination costs.
