Key points05

  • Truck repair and maintenance costs rose 8.6% in 2025 to 21.5 cents per mile, from 19.8 cents in 2024 (ATRI).
  • Volvo launched the Silver Service Contract on Monday at ATA's MC&E in Charlotte, North Carolina.
  • Silver covers engine, aftertreatment, transmission, clutch and select driveline components, sold via nearly 400 dealers in the US and Canada.
  • Volvo did not disclose Silver pricing, contract duration or mileage caps.
  • Customers can bundle Silver into Volvo Financial Services financing interest-free over the loan period.

Truck repair and maintenance costs climbed 8.6% in 2025 to 21.5 cents per mile, and Volvo Trucks North America wants to turn that volatility into a flat monthly bill. The OEM launched its Silver Service Contract on Monday at the American Trucking Associations' Management Conference & Exhibition in Charlotte, North Carolina, adding engine, aftertreatment, transmission and clutch repair coverage to the preventive maintenance already in its Blue contract.

The cost numbers come from the American Transportation Research Institute's 2026 Analysis of the Operational Costs of Trucking. Maintenance rose from 19.8 cents per mile in 2024. Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America, called maintenance and powertrain repairs the least predictable costs a fleet carries and said Silver puts them inside a single monthly payment.

Silver is available now for the all-new VNL and all-new VNR through Volvo's network of nearly 400 authorized dealers in the US and Canada. Volvo did not disclose pricing, contract duration or mileage caps, and the release does not say how Silver interacts with the standard truck warranty. That gap matters for fleets running the math.

What does Silver add to Blue?

Blue covers preventive maintenance only. It uses connected-vehicle data and artificial intelligence to set each truck's service schedule from powertrain operating conditions — fuel consumption, transport cycle, gross combination weight, topography and idle time, according to Volvo's Silver sales sheet.

Silver keeps those benefits and extends coverage to other select driveline components plus the wearable clutch lining kit. When a truck lands at a dealer for an unplanned repair, any preventive maintenance due can happen on the same visit. Scheduled work includes:

  • Valve adjustments
  • Diesel particulate filter cleaning
  • Diesel exhaust fluid tank flushes
  • Transmission and rear axle oil changes

The exact list varies by contract mileage. Above Silver sits Gold, Volvo's full-service plan, sold with the VNR Electric.

How does the money work?

Customers financing through Volvo Financial Services can bundle Silver into the truck payment and spread its cost over the financing period interest-free. Optional add-ons — annual DOT inspections, truck washes, on-site maintenance, pickup and delivery — vary by dealer location.

Each customer gets a Volvo Fleet Manager at a certified dealer. The manager plans maintenance from truck telemetry and handles service campaigns, recalls and over-the-air software updates. More than 80% of connected Volvo trucks ran the latest software as of June. If a truck breaks down away from its home dealer, the fleet manager coordinates with the servicing dealer through Volvo Action Service, the company's 24/7 roadside assistance and service coordination network.

"The Volvo Fleet Manager becomes part of the customer's team," Voorhoeve said. "They know the fleet, they know what preventive service is due, and they handle it."

Why the undisclosed price matters

Silver shifts the cost of a major powertrain failure from the fleet to Volvo for a monthly fee. That trade looks different at 21.5 cents per mile than it did at 19.8. For carriers weighing the deal, everything now hinges on where Volvo sets the price — and whether it undercuts the cost of carrying that risk themselves. Until Volvo publishes rates and terms, fleets can price Blue, but not Silver, against their own maintenance ledgers.
