Key points03

  • Seven Islands Shipping paid close to $15.5m for the 50,000 dwt MTM Mississippi (built 2006), renamed Inspire
  • VesselsValue puts the Seven Islands fleet at about $612.9m — the first time it has passed the half-billion-dollar mark
  • The Fairfax-backed owner has grown from 14 ships in 2019 to 29 ships and is India's second-largest private tanker company

Seven Islands Shipping has paid close to $15.5m for the 50,000 dwt MTM Mississippi, a 2006-built MR product tanker sold by MT Maritime and renamed Inspire, pushing the Mumbai-based owner's fleet value past the half-billion-dollar mark for the first time.

VesselsValue now puts the Fairfax-backed company's fleet at about $612.9m. The milestone caps a rapid expansion: Seven Islands has grown from 14 ships in 2019 to 29 ships today, making it India's second-largest private tanker shipping company.

The Inspire acquisition is the company's second MR purchase this year. Seven Islands now stands just one vessel short of the 20-ship mark in the handysize tanker segment, where it has spent years steadily assembling one of the larger MR fleets in South Asia.

For sellers, the deal underscores continued liquidity in the mid-aged MR tonnage market, where 19-year-old units are still commanding firm prices. For Seven Islands, the purchase extends a buying programme that has added 15 ships in roughly six years — a pace of fleet growth few Indian private owners have matched.

The company's Fairfax backing gives it access to capital that supports this consolidation strategy. Its scale in the MR segment positions it to compete for regional product cargo contracts that smaller Indian owners struggle to service with equivalent fleet depth.

With one more handysize purchase needed to reach 20 vessels, and fleet value now clear of $600m, Seven Islands' expansion trajectory suggests further tonnage acquisitions are likely while MR asset prices hold.
