Mammoth Freighters has delivered its second Boeing 777-200LRMF converted freighter to Jetran, with the aircraft already flying revenue service for DHL Air UK under the UK registration G-DHME. The handover, announced by the Fort Worth, Texas-based conversion specialist in a LinkedIn post on 2 November, marks the latest step in a lessor-driven widebody freighter program that now spans more than two dozen aircraft.
Jetran, also headquartered in Texas, took delivery of the twinjet and placed it directly with DHL Air UK. Both of the Mammoth-converted 777-200LRMF freighters supplied to Jetran so far have now entered revenue service with the DHL unit, Mammoth confirmed.
How the delivery sequence unfolded
The first Mammoth-converted 777-200LRMF went to Jetran in August and was displayed at the Farnborough Airshow in the UK in July before entering operations. The second aircraft follows roughly three months later, keeping the program on the cadence DHL has outlined for its leased converted fleet.
The scale of the commitment is substantial. Jetran has ordered more than two dozen Mammoth 777-200LRMF freighters in total, and 13 of them are set to enter revenue service within the DHL global network. DHL has said that four of those 13 leased conversions are scheduled to enter service this year.
What the conversion involves
The modification work on each airframe includes fitting a large main-deck cargo door and installing advanced cargo handling systems. The original airframes and engines are retained, an approach that preserves the 777-200LR's range and performance characteristics while adding freighter capability at a lower cost basis than new-build freighters.
For express operators such as DHL, converted widebody capacity on routes with dense volume offers a way to upgauge from narrowbody feeders without the capital outlay of factory freighters. Each converted 777 that enters the network effectively adds long-haul main-deck capacity to the express integrator's lane structure.
Certification opened the door to deliveries
Mammoth Freighters received Supplemental Type Certification from the Federal Aviation Administration for its 777-200LRMF program in April. That certification cleared the company to begin deliveries to launch customer Qatar Airways Cargo, which holds an agreement covering five of the aircraft with Jetran.
The April STC milestone set the regulatory foundation for the deliveries that followed: first to Qatar Airways Cargo as launch operator, and now to DHL Air UK through Jetran's leasing arrangements. The same certificate covers the aircraft now flying for the express carrier.
What comes next
With two aircraft in revenue service and a pipeline of 13 DHL-network placements — four of them due this year — the Jetran-Mammoth partnership is one of the more visible converted-widebody programs in the express market. The remaining aircraft in Jetran's order of more than two dozen units point to continued delivery flow through coming quarters, assuming conversion slots and STC-covered production keep pace with the schedule.
