Key points05

  • Seacon Shipping is paying $19.6m for the Jia Yue Ming Zhu, a chemical tanker built in October 2025
  • The deal requires a $2.94m deposit on delivery and $16.66m within 120 days
  • Seacon bought two tankers from Oriental Prime Shipping in June for $39.2m, $19.6m each
  • A $103.4m refinancing of four 18,500 dwt chemical tankers closed in August on 10-year terms
  • Seacon reportedly seeks to sell four MR tankers en bloc; the sale is unconfirmed

Hong Kong-listed Seacon Shipping has agreed a $19.6m deal for a two-month-old oil and chemical tanker, its second acquisition at exactly that price this year, even as shipbroking reports link the Qingdao-based owner to a four-vessel MR tanker disposal.

The company's Singapore subsidiary will buy the 4,981 gt Jia Yue Ming Zhu from Marshall Islands-incorporated Sanhe Jiaye, according to a filing with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Chengxi-built in October this year, the ship will be renamed Golden Canna on delivery.

Payment terms are tight and clearly structured. Seacon will hand over a $2.94m deposit upon delivery, with the remaining $16.66m due within 120 days. The owner plans to fund the purchase through internal resources and external financing.

Is Seacon selling MR tonnage at the same time?

The latest purchase lands alongside shipbroking reports linking Seacon to the en bloc sale of four MR product tankers — two recently completed vessels and two still under construction. The company has not publicly confirmed the reported transaction, so the disposal remains unverified.

Taken together, the moves would fit a pattern. Seacon has spent the past 18 months actively reshaping its tanker portfolio, pairing investments in newer chemical and product carriers with vessel sales and refinancing deals rather than simple fleet growth.

In June, the company agreed to acquire two chemical and oil tankers, Golden Gerbera and Golden Osmanthus, from Oriental Prime Shipping for $39.2m combined — $19.6m apiece, matching the price now being paid for Golden Canna. That consistency suggests a deliberate benchmark for modern small- and mid-size tonnage in this segment.

How is the fleet being financed?

The balance sheet has been reworked as well. In August, Seacon completed a $103.4m refinancing of four 18,500 dwt chemical tankers, replacing earlier sale-and-leaseback arrangements with new 10-year facilities carrying lower financing margins. For a fleet operator of this size, shifting from leaseback structures to conventional decade-long debt reduces long-term financing cost and returns fuller ownership economics to the group.

Seacon's push into larger product tankers began in 2024, when it contracted four 50,000 dwt MR vessels at Chengxi Shipyard for around $45m each — roughly 2.3 times the unit price of the Golden Canna deal, reflecting the scale gap between MR and smaller chemical tonnage. The group was subsequently linked to another four MR newbuildings through a joint venture with Huanghai Shipbuilding.

At the end of June, Seacon controlled 38 vessels outright and held investments in another 15 through joint ventures, with a diversified portfolio that included 18 oil and chemical tankers.

For counterparties in the chemical and products trades, the message is a fleet steadily rotating toward younger, larger units funded on cheaper long-term debt. If the reported four-vessel MR sale is confirmed, Seacon will have completed a two-way portfolio reset inside a single year — and further fleet renewals at these price levels look likely as the refinancing headroom opens up.
