Key points03

  • RCL ordered four 3,100 TEU Honghu-series ships, bringing its Huangpu Wenchong programme to 16 vessels across three designs
  • The programme spans eight 4,488 TEU ships, four 1,900 TEU feeders and four 3,100 TEU units; prices and delivery dates undisclosed
  • Comparable 1,900 TEU newbuildings were quoted around $32m each in August when RCL booked its feeder quartet

Regional Container Lines has signed for four 3,100 TEU containerships at CSSC Huangpu Wenchong, taking the Thai liner's orderbook at the Guangzhou yard to 16 vessels across three distinct designs and adding 12,400 TEU to its newbuilding pipeline.

The quartet belongs to Huangpu Wenchong's in-house Honghu series. Neither price nor delivery dates have been disclosed. The deal pushes RCL's programme at the builder to three size segments: eight 4,488 TEU vessels, four 1,900 TEU feeders and now four 3,100 TEU units.

The contract lands just over a month after RCL booked four 1,900 TEU ships at the same yard — an order Splash reported in August, when comparable newbuildings were being quoted at roughly $32m apiece. At that point, RCL already had eight ships of approximately 4,300 TEU contracted at Huangpu Wenchong.

The timing carried symbolic weight. RCL signed the latest contract on the same day Huangpu Wenchong handed over the first of the line's 4,488 TEU newbuildings and named another two sisterships. The relationship dates back to 2024, when RCL initially contracted four ships in that class before expanding the series to eight.

For RCL, the strategy is clear: consolidate tonnage replacement and growth at a single proven yard while slotting capacity into three intra-Asia-relevant size brackets. The 1,900 TEU feeders serve short-haul relay work, the 3,100 TEU units fit mid-range regional loops, and the 4,488 TEU ships give the line genuine flexibility on longer Southeast Asia–North Asia corridors. Repeat business at one shipbuilder also streamlines specification commonality, crew training and spare-parts logistics — a cost discipline that matters in a segment where intra-Asia freight rates remain volatile.

For Huangpu Wenchong, the RCL account has become a franchise. Sixteen hulls across three designs from a single mid-sized regional operator signal the yard's ability to hold schedule and price in the 2,000–5,000 TEU band, a segment the big Korean and Chinese yards increasingly deprioritise in favour of 15,000-plus TEU boxships and dual-fuel tonnage. That leaves owners of regional tonnage with fewer credible builders — and repeated awards like this one reinforce Huangpu Wenchong's position in that narrowing field.

For shippers and forwarders on intra-Asia lanes, the implication is capacity renewal rather than expansion shock. RCL's pipeline suggests steady fleet modernisation, with newer, more efficient tonnage replacing older chartered or owned units. If deliveries cluster over the coming years, competitors on Thai and broader Southeast Asian regional services should expect RCL to defend or grow slot share with lower unit costs — pressure that typically transmits into intra-Asia rate competition.

With the first 4,488 TEU unit already delivered and two sisters named, deliveries from the expanded programme should start feeding into RCL's network in the near term, and further orders at Huangpu Wenchong cannot be ruled out given the pace of the line's returns to the yard since 2024.
