Nordstrom has piloted a same-day delivery option in Los Angeles and wants to move toward seven-day-a-week delivery, an executive said at Parcel Forum '26.
The department store retailer ran the same-day pilot in the Los Angeles market, one of the most competitive last-mile arenas in the United States, as it weighs how to extend delivery coverage across the full week rather than the traditional weekday window.
The push toward weekend delivery marks a shift in how Nordstrom thinks about its e-commerce promise. Customers increasingly expect parcel arrivals on Saturdays and Sundays, when many retail delivery networks sit idle, and the retailer is positioning its network to meet that demand.
For carriers and parcel operators, the signal is straightforward: retailers of Nordstrom's profile are preparing to buy weekend and same-day capacity, not just standard weekday ground service. Carriers with existing weekend delivery footprints — notably the US Postal Service, which delivers on Saturdays and increasingly on Sundays, and parcel majors expanding their seven-day operations — stand to benefit as more retailers follow this pattern.
Forwarders and 3PLs serving retail clients should also take note. Same-day delivery requires dense urban inventory positioning, often a mix of store-fulfilled orders and micro-fulfillment capacity. Nordstrom's pilot in Los Angeles suggests the retailer is testing whether its store network can double as same-day fulfillment nodes.
The Los Angeles market is a demanding testing ground. It combines dense population, heavy congestion and intense competition from Amazon's same-day footprint, which has reset customer expectations for speed across the region.
Nordstrom's executive disclosed the plans at Parcel Forum '26, an industry event focused on the small-parcel shipping sector.
The commercial stakes are clear. Retailers that can promise faster, more flexible delivery windows — including weekends — typically see higher conversion rates and better customer retention, but the cost per parcel rises sharply once retailers move beyond consolidated weekday ground deliveries into same-day and weekend service.
Whether Nordstrom rolls the Los Angeles pilot into a broader same-day program will depend on that economics test: whether customers respond enough to justify the incremental delivery spend.
The retailer's stated direction suggests more demand for weekend parcel capacity ahead, giving carriers with seven-day networks a growing commercial edge as retail delivery expectations continue to tighten.
