The 16,520-TEU MSC Victorine suffered a roughly 10-metre hull tear after the 99,526-GT Mein Schiff 3 struck its stern at about 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, in Germany’s Bremerhaven port.

The Liberian-flagged container ship, built in 2023, was berthed at the container terminal when the TUI Cruises vessel departed the Columbuskaje cruise terminal with tug assistance. The collision followed shortly afterward, as strong winds associated with Storm Manja affected Germany’s North Sea coast.

What damage did the collision cause?

German media reported that the collision tore a roughly 10-metre section of the MSC vessel’s hull above the waterline. The same reports cited damage to containers and deck structures, while Bremen’s port authorities confirmed that no water entered the ship.

The impact also damaged several lifeboats and their launching equipment aboard Mein Schiff 3. Two assisting tugs sustained damage during the maneuver, broadening the physical consequences beyond the two main vessels.

How many ships were involved?

Bremen police said Mein Schiff 3 struck two container ships. TUI Cruises maintained that only one vessel was involved, leaving a material discrepancy over the scope of the collision before the investigation concluded.

The smaller MSC Anne F was also berthed nearby, but its involvement remains unclear. The conflicting accounts do not establish whether Anne F was struck or sustained damage, and the full scope of damage therefore remains unsettled.

What does this mean for cargo schedules?

The clearest established freight consequence is that MSC Victorine did not sail as planned. The vessel had been scheduled to proceed to Hamburg but remained in Bremerhaven, leaving its next call and the timing of associated cargo movements unconfirmed.

No revised sailing schedule or repair timetable was reported. For shippers with bookings on the 16,520-TEU vessel, the original Hamburg connection can no longer be treated as firm, while reported container damage raises an additional cargo-condition question.

Forwarders face a separate routing question because police and TUI give different accounts of the number of ships involved. If Anne F was struck, the consequences would extend to another boxship call at the same port, but no specific customer, cargo or booking effect has been identified.

Was anyone injured?

The Mein Schiff 3 returned to the Columbuskaje terminal with tug assistance for damage inspections. It carried 2,428 passengers and 922 crew, a total of 3,350 people, and no injuries were reported.

Can the cruise continue?

The collision also put the start of a 20-night Canary Islands and Morocco cruise in doubt. TUI Cruises had not confirmed whether the sailing could proceed, so the next operating decision remained open as the ship stayed at the terminal.

For the cruise operator, the reported damage to lifeboats and launching equipment broadens the inspection beyond the hull alone. No alternative port, repair estimate or new departure date was reported for the 3,350 passengers and crew who returned with the vessel.

What will the investigation establish?

Bremen’s water police opened an investigation into the collision. The exact cause and full extent of damage remain unestablished, with the weather, departure maneuver and conflicting account of the number of ships involved all requiring resolution.

For the container operation, the decisive evidence will be the extent of hull, container and deck damage, because that determines whether Victorine can depart for Hamburg and when the vessel’s 16,520-TEU capacity returns to service. The cruise operator faces a parallel timetable decision on the 20-night sailing.

Until investigators establish cause and damage, neither a restored freight schedule nor a confirmed cruise departure can be treated as settled. The next firm capacity signal will come from confirmation of when the 16,520-TEU MSC Victorine can resume its Hamburg voyage and whether Mein Schiff 3 can begin its 20-night itinerary.
