Lufthansa Cargo will add a Singapore freighter service and convert several European routes from seasonal to permanent operation, according to industry trade Cargo Facts.
The Singapore leg puts a dedicated aircraft onto one of Asia-Pacific's most contested air-cargo gateways. Changi has long sat alongside Hong Kong and Incheon as the region's bellwether hubs, and a scheduled Lufthansa freighter gives the carrier a fixed option on flows that previously depended on belly capacity or wet-leased lift.
For a combination carrier — one that moves cargo in the belly of passenger jets as well as on freighters — the decision to launch a new freighter route is rarely casual. It is the mirror image of how the parent group runs its passenger network.
What does "permanent" actually change here?
In this business, "permanent" is a small word that does real work. It tells shippers that the capacity they have spent three peak seasons chasing will, from now on, simply be there in February too.
Seasonal European cargo services have a particular habit of vanishing right when a forwarder needs them most — usually in the early-year lull, just before ocean reliability breaks down. Locking routes into the timetable is, in practical terms, a booking-stability move for shippers running annual contracts.
For a forwarder moving pharma out of Brussels or automotive electronics out of Munich, that is not nothing.
Why Singapore, and why now?
Southeast Asian e-commerce and pharma tonnage have rebuilt faster than most observers expected after the post-pandemic freight slump. A scheduled freighter into Changi lets the carrier position capacity ahead of the northern hemisphere peak rather than scrambling for ad-hoc charters.
It also keeps Lufthansa Cargo in the same conversation as Cathay Cargo, Singapore Airlines Cargo and Emirates SkyCargo — operators that have leaned harder into dedicated freighters since 2022.
What does this mean for shippers and forwarders?
In the short term, not much beyond another carrier option on a lane already well served. The longer-term question is whether Lufthansa Cargo trades belly capacity from its parent's passenger network for more owned freighters. Every combination carrier reaches that fork eventually, and the parent group's recent passenger-network reshaping makes the freight answer easier to read.
What makes this interesting is the timing. Combination carriers usually take freighter decisions when their passenger network has stabilised — usually after a winter schedule has been bedded in. Singapore fits that pattern.
There is a quieter commercial consequence, too. Dedicated freighters give a carrier control of capacity that belly-hold never can. When passenger demand spikes and bellies are full of bags, cargo gets bumped. A freighter doesn't have that problem, and the carrier decides what goes on it. On a pharma freight lane, that reliability gap is often what decides the tender.
The schedule announcements nobody shouts about
Tuesday-afternoon schedule news rarely moves spot rates or grabs headlines. It does, however, quietly reset which carriers a freight manager calls first on the next request for quotation.
For shippers, that is the practical question worth sitting with: does your current carrier mix still match the routes that have just stopped being seasonal?
If the answer is no, the tender calendar just moved. Lufthansa's announcement, read that way, is less a network story and more a procurement story for any shipper whose annual carrier review happens to be due.
