Key points03
- Kalmar Care agreement covers 40 cranes: 8 STS cranes and 32 automated stacking cranes at TTI Algeciras
- TTI Algeciras expansion will raise annual capacity to 2.1 million TEU by 2028
- Order booked in Kalmar's Q3 2026 intake; terminal also runs 23 Kalmar straddle carriers
Kalmar has signed a Kalmar Care maintenance agreement covering 40 cranes at Total Terminal International Algeciras (TTI Algeciras), one of the two container terminals at the Port of Algeciras Bay in southern Spain.
The contract spans eight ship-to-shore (STS) cranes and 32 automated stacking cranes (ASCs) at the semi-automated facility. Under its terms, Kalmar will provide both preventive and corrective mechanical maintenance for the equipment. The company booked the order in its third-quarter 2026 order intake.
The deal matters commercially for more than its equipment count. TTI Algeciras is midway through a major expansion that will lift annual handling capacity to 2.1 million TEU by 2028, and the terminal can already berth current and next-generation ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs). On a transshipment corridor where cargo can shift between Mediterranean and Atlantic gateways on short notice, crane uptime directly determines how much of that new capacity a carrier can actually use. A single STS crane out of service on a ULCV call can add hours to a port stay and ripple through a string of subsequent rotations.
For Kalmar, the agreement deepens an already substantial foothold at the terminal. TTI Algeciras operates a fleet of 23 Kalmar straddle carriers and already relies on the manufacturer for fleet maintenance. The new contract extends that relationship from the yard to the quay wall and the stacking area, tying the terminal's core cargo-handling infrastructure to a single service provider.
Terminal leadership framed the decision around reliability rather than price. "We chose Kalmar to deliver mechanical preventive maintenance for our STS and ASC equipment because we value their professional, highly responsive service team and proven track record," said Alonso Luque, CEO of TTI Algeciras. "Reliable maintenance is essential to ensure maximum operational efficiency and equipment uptime as we continue servicing next-generation Ultra Large Container Vessels at our terminal."
Kalmar's country leadership echoed the strategic framing. "We are very proud to expand our long-standing partnership with TTI Algeciras through this new Kalmar Care service agreement," said Sergio Peralta, Country Director Spain at Kalmar. "Our dedicated local team is committed to delivering service excellence and ensuring high equipment availability to support TTI Algeciras as a premier semi-automated transshipment hub in Southern Europe."
The maintenance commitment signals continuity for carriers routing ULCV traffic through the Strait of Gibraltar. As the terminal pushes toward its 2.1 million TEU target, sustained availability across its STS and ASC fleets will determine whether the expansion converts into dependable berth productivity and transshipment dwell times for ocean carriers and their forwarder customers.
With the order logged in Q3 2026 and the capacity build-out running to 2028, Kalmar's service teams now carry a four-year maintenance mandate that runs in parallel with the terminal's growth trajectory.
