Gemini swap strains Khor Fakkan ahead of AGX, FM1 relaunch

Khor Fakkan braces for a Gemini call as Hapag-Lloyd's AGX and Maersk's FM1 replace Jebel Ali this weekend. Queues are building, chassis supply is tightening, and no fresh schedule is in hand.

Key points05

  • Gemini relaunches its Far East–Middle East service this weekend, replacing Jebel Ali calls with Khor Fakkan
  • The relaunched rotation is marketed as AGX by Hapag-Lloyd and FM1 by Maersk
  • Vessel queues are building at Khor Fakkan's breakwater ahead of the first call
  • Neither Hapag-Lloyd nor Maersk has published a fresh schedule with hard transit-time numbers
  • Khor Fakkan has not absorbed alliance-string demand at this scale in years

Gemini's relaunched Far East–Middle East service will drop Jebel Ali calls in favor of Khor Fakkan this weekend, a port swap that already has the smaller UAE hub showing fresh strain.

The reshuffled rotation, marketed as AGX by Hapag-Lloyd and FM1 by Maersk, replaces the Gulf's flagship container terminal with the Sharjah-coast facility on the Gulf of Oman. Khor Fakkan is bracing for demand the port has not absorbed at this scale in years.

What does the swap change?

Jebel Ali anchors the UAE's bonded trucking, feeder and on-dock rail network, with decades of landside infrastructure behind it. Khor Fakkan runs leaner. Narrower gate windows, a tighter yard, less chassis float. Dropping a Gemini string onto that footprint tests the terminal's headroom before the first sailing even posts.

How bad is the strain?

Vessel queues are building at the breakwater. Truck turn times at the gates are lengthening. Chassis supply inside the terminal is tightening. No carrier has published a fresh schedule with hard transit-time numbers, so shippers do not yet know the cost penalty of transshipping through Khor Fakkan instead of Jebel Ali.

What does the silence cost?

Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk have said nothing beyond the alliance notice. That leaves forwarders in the dark on capacity split, vessel deployment and whether a contingency Jebel Ali call survives on an ad-hoc basis. Dubai-based forwarders are already mapping fallback routings on Far East–Middle East cargo.

Who absorbs the shock?

Shippers face three near-term risks. Demurrage exposure climbs on landside cargo as dwell at Khor Fakkan stretches beyond free time. Congestion that bleeds back into Jebel Ali tightens feeder capacity into Saudi Arabia and Oman, lifting truck rates on lanes that move Gulf-interior freight. And a swap this size signals the carriers will subordinate hub prestige to schedule reliability — a tradeoff that usually ripples into westbound Asia–Europe string planning later in the quarter.

What about Jebel Ali?

Jebel Ali does not lose a Gemini string without compensation. The hub still anchors the alliance's eastbound network into the Gulf interior, and feeder calls feeding Saudi Arabia, Iraq and the smaller Gulf states stay anchored there. The swap is surgical, not sweeping. But it sets a precedent. If Khor Fakkan holds up under the call, expect other alliance strings to revisit similar rotations at congested hubs elsewhere in the network.

Where does the network go next?

Khor Fakkan has spent the last decade building itself as the Gulf of Oman alternative to Jebel Ali. A Gemini call gives the port flagship liner status overnight. It also exposes what the terminal can and cannot absorb when a global alliance rotates a service onto it without a phased ramp.

What to watch

The first AGX/FM1 call window this weekend. The queue count at the breakwater by Monday. Any carrier notice on contingency Jebel Ali calls. If congestion spreads, expect the alliance to add buffer days into the rotation — a move that tightens effective Asia–Europe capacity and pushes shippers toward air and rail options on time-sensitive cargo.
