At least nine cargo ships were struck near the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria in October, leaving some 34 sailors dead or missing, and France has now extended its maritime patrol deployment in the Black Sea by several weeks in response.
A French Atlantique 2 surveillance aircraft, temporarily relocated to the Mihail Kogalniceanu air base in Romania on October 18, had been scheduled to leave on November 6. Its commander, whose identity the French naval forces withheld for security reasons, announced the extension on Thursday at the base.
"The Atlantique 2 presence will be maintained for a few weeks from now on," the commander said. "We are here to ensure the safety of navigation of the commercial traffic in the Black Sea."
Why the Black Sea matters to shipping
The Black Sea carries grain, crude oil and oil products, and is shared by Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia and Turkey, as well as the two belligerents, Ukraine and Russia. For carriers, forwarders and cargo interests on those lanes, October's casualty count — nine merchant vessels hit, 34 crew dead or missing — represents a direct threat to hull, cargo and seafarer safety near NATO's eastern flank.
The escalation has exposed member states Romania and Bulgaria, which asked NATO for reinforcements before the French deployment. Russia has denied targeting Ukraine's neighbors.
The Atlantique 2 is designed to detect submarines, warships and smaller threats including sea drones and mines. Its operational record in the region already includes one concrete success: the aircraft detected the three sea drones that ultimately struck and sank the Greek-owned container vessel Contship Jet in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone on October 28.
The commander said the crew notified Bulgarian authorities and the vessel an hour before impact. That warning gave the Contship Jet's crew time to escape unscathed, even though the ship itself was lost.
What the aircraft can and cannot do
The mission's limits matter for shipowners calculating risk on Black Sea routes. The plane can see the threat coming, but it cannot stop it.
"We are a surveillance aircraft," the commander said. "We are able to detect. We are not able to neutralize and intercept these kind of drones."
That gap between detection and interception defines the current risk picture: crews may get an hour's warning, as in the Contship Jet case, but incoming drones will still reach their targets unless another asset intervenes.
NATO said this week it has committed to investing more than $40 billion in counter-drone capabilities over the next five years. The alliance described its commitment to defending all members, including those on the Black Sea, as "ironclad."
For grain and oil products shippers, the practical near-term protection remains surveillance and early warning rather than interception. With the French aircraft staying on for several more weeks and counter-drone investment still years from full delivery, commercial traffic in the Black Sea will continue to depend on detection, timely notification and the risk tolerance of carriers and their crews.
