FedEx has moved two giant pandas from Chengdu to Atlanta aboard a dedicated Boeing 777 freighter, flying the bears as the aircraft's only cargo and donating the full cost of the relocation.
The operation, carried out with Zoo Atlanta, transported six-year-old male Ping Ping and five-year-old female Fu Shuang non-stop from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport aboard the jet known as the "FedEx Panda Express".
The flight is the 23rd panda move FedEx has handled to and from China since 2000.
How the operation ran
The animals travelled in custom-built travel crates for the full journey, with Zoo Atlanta animal specialists accompanying them in the main deck hold. Payload management was straightforward in one respect: the pandas were the sole cargo aboard the aircraft.
Alongside the crates, the 777F carried fresh bamboo, water and a selection of the pandas' favourite treats. Before departure, both bears spent time acclimatising to their enclosures to keep the journey as safe and comfortable as possible.
FedEx's role did not end at the airport. The operator also provided trucking and logistics support in Atlanta to move the pandas from Hartsfield-Jackson to Zoo Atlanta, closing out the door-to-door chain.
Why the carrier donates the move
FedEx said it would cover the full transportation cost of the relocation as part of its ongoing corporate social responsibility and environmental conservation work. That turns a high-visibility charter into a marketing asset rather than a commercial shipment — the 777F dedicated to two pandas and their bamboo is a statement about network capability, not revenue.
Richard Smith, chief operating officer, International, and chief executive officer, Airline, at FedEx, framed the mission in exactly those terms.
"We have had the privilege of transporting giant pandas for more than two decades, and every time the FedEx Panda Express is called into service, our entire team feels the significance of the mission," Smith said.
"Safely delivering Ping Ping and Fu Shuang to their new home in Atlanta underscores our long-standing commitment to global conservation and our network's ability to securely transport high-priority, precious cargo."
What it signals about high-value cargo handling
For shippers and forwarders moving live animals, pharma or other sensitive freight, the panda operation is a demonstration of the disciplines that matter: dedicated aircraft, custom-built enclosures, in-flight specialist care and seamless air-to-road handover.
The animal transport segment has been active beyond Atlanta as well, with carriers including LATAM Cargo and TAAG recently completing live-animal charter operations in the Americas and Africa — an indication that zoological and conservation moves remain a steady, if niche, part of the charter market.
With 23 panda relocations now in its logbook since 2000, FedEx has effectively made the Panda Express a recurring proof point for its live-animal capability, and each new conservation move extends that track record.
