Etsy joins 63-shipper electric Class 8 pilot for Houston-Dallas corridor

Key points05

  • 63-shipper GMA coalition; first trucks deployed on Houston-Dallas lane in early 2027 under carrier Nevoya using Tesla Semi tractors
  • Etsy's road freight accounts for over 60% of its shipping emissions; company targets a 52% cut in scope 3 emissions per dollar of gross profit by 2030 against a 2020 baseline
  • Heavy-duty trucks make up about 9% of the U.S. truck population but produce half of truck emissions; zero-emission Class 8 sales run below 1% of new orders
  • Etsy committed to a four-year GMA term measured in tonne-kilometers of Environmental Attribute Certificates, with no tie to specific shipments or lanes
  • Each battery-electric charging session runs about 45 minutes, shaping routing and driver scheduling on the corridor

Etsy has signed onto a 63-shipper coalition funding Class 8 battery-electric trucks on the Houston-Dallas corridor, with the first tractors scheduled to enter service in early 2027 under carrier Nevoya.

The marketplace joins Amazon, eBay, Green Worldwide Shipping, Meta, and—most recently—Google in the Center for Green Market Activation (GMA) program originally announced in January. Google's addition expanded the buyer pool to 63 corporate members this year. Together they are underwriting a zero-emission procurement that selected Tesla Semi tractors for the roundtrip lane.

Sam Brundrett, Etsy's environmental impact lead, framed the commercial logic in blunt terms. "As a marketplace, we facilitate millions of shipments each year. Shipping is our largest source of emissions at over 60%! Road freight accounts for most of our shipping footprint," he told Supply Chain Dive.

What is Etsy actually buying?

Etsy is not reserving truck capacity. Its initial four-year GMA term purchases Environmental Attribute Certificates measured in tonne-kilometers, with no tie to a specific shipment or lane.

"The certificates help cover the additional cost of operating electric trucks compared with diesel trucks," Brundrett said.

The mechanism runs as follows: Nevoya procures the tractors, secures charging access through partner Greenlane Infrastructure, and arranges renewable energy supply to generate the certificates. Shipper-members then pay for the right to claim those emissions cuts in greenhouse gas reporting.

Clayton Gerber, senior program manager at GMA, said buyers "fund zero-emission trucking deployment without needing their own freight to move on a specific truck or lane." Etsy does not operate trucks; the book-and-claim structure lets a non-asset shipper underwrite zero-emission capacity in a market where it barely exists.

Heavy-duty tractors account for roughly 9% of the U.S. truck population yet produce half of truck emissions, according to Brundrett. Zero-emission Class 8 sales sit below 1% of new orders.

Why Houston-Dallas?

GMA targeted the Texas corridor because freight volumes move heavily in both directions, Gerber said. Three operational factors sealed the geography:

  • The round-trip distance falls inside Tesla Semi battery range.
  • Texas electricity prices rank among the lowest in the country.
  • Permitting timelines and grid access at charging sites proved shorter than in coastal states.

Nevoya began coordinating with Greenlane Infrastructure—a joint venture focused on public fast-charging—while awaiting the first tractor deliveries. Initial units roll in late 2026, with the bulk arriving in early 2027. A second GMA procurement cycle is already mapped for 2027.

Texas also concentrates Etsy's parcel activity. "Electrifying freight there can both reduce our emissions in a geography where we have significant freight and reduce local air pollution for communities where many Etsy buyers and sellers live and work," Brundrett said.

What's the timeline pressure?

Etsy has committed to a 52% reduction in scope 3 emissions per dollar of gross profit by 2030, measured against a 2020 baseline. The GMA participation covers one slice of that pledge. Each charging session currently runs about 45 minutes under hours-of-service rules—a constraint that shapes routing more than price does for this lane.

For forwarders, carriers, and third-party logistics brokers watching the corridor, the binding question is sustained capacity after the pilot. Etsy has committed to a defined volume of tonne-kilometers of EACs, not a dedicated fleet of trucks. The 2027 second procurement will test whether demand from the broader 63-member pool can keep zero-emission capacity on the lane running through and beyond the original four-year window.

Watch the second GMA procurement round in 2027: the volume it secures will signal whether book-and-claim demand from major U.S. shippers can keep a Class 8 battery-electric lane commercially viable past 2030.
