  • The role covers ports, terminals and logistics businesses across 22 geographies with more than 12,000 employees
  • Varsamidis joined P&O Ports in 1997 and has close to three decades with DP World and its predecessor

DP World has named Jason Varsamidis as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of its Asia Pacific region, effective immediately, handing him a portfolio that spans ports, terminals and logistics businesses across 22 geographies and more than 12,000 employees.

The appointment is an inside job. Varsamidis has spent close to three decades with DP World and its predecessor P&O Ports, which he joined in 1997. Since 2020 he has served as Chief Financial Officer of DP World Asia Pacific, where he shaped the region's strategy, investment agenda and business performance. Before that he ran the finance function at DP World Australia for seven years.

That CV matters for shippers and carriers dealing with the operator in the region. A CFO-turned-CEO signals continuity on capital allocation — terminal expansions, logistics acquisitions, turnaround programmes — rather than a strategic reset. Varsamidis has personally overseen mergers and acquisitions, infrastructure projects and business turnarounds across his career, the kind of work that decides which berths get deepened and which inland links get built.

What does the change mean for shippers?

In his new role, Varsamidis will focus on driving regional strategy and operational performance, strengthening end-to-end supply chains and expanding DP World's integrated logistics capabilities across Asia Pacific. In plain terms: more pressure to bundle ocean terminal calls with inland distribution, warehousing and forwarder-style services under one commercial roof.

For freight forwarders, that integration push is the practical question. As DP World deepens its end-to-end offer across Asia Pacific, forwarders face a terminal operator that increasingly competes on their turf — while carriers calling at DP World facilities gain a counterparty with a finance chief's discipline on throughput and yield.

Group CEO Yuvraj Narayan framed the promotion in growth terms. He described Varsamidis as a highly respected leader with deep understanding of the business and the markets in which it operates, noting that his track record and commercial acumen make him well placed to lead Asia Pacific as one of DP World's key growth engines.

Varsamedis himself kept his statement short on specifics but firm on direction, expressing commitment to maintaining momentum, delivering for customers and partners and advancing strategic priorities across the region.

A finance pedigree at the top

The internal promotion follows a recognisable pattern at large port operators: steady operational leadership backed by tight financial control. Seven years as Australia CFO, then five steering Asia Pacific finance, gives Varsamidis a working knowledge of every major asset in the network — and the numbers behind them.

His mandate — operational performance plus integrated logistics expansion — suggests DP World sees Asia Pacific not just as a throughput region but as a supply chain services market. Watch the investment pipeline under his tenure; where capital lands will show whether that integration ambition converts into new capacity and services for shippers.
