CMA CGM's 300,000-Tonne LNG Bet: Early Mover Pays Off

CMA CGM's 2017 deal locking in 300,000 tonnes of LNG a year from TotalEnergies has paid off, its bunkering VP Farid Trad told SIBCON — but agility remains the hedge.

Key points05

  • CMA CGM signed its first 10-year LNG supply agreement with TotalEnergies in 2017.
  • The deal secures 300,000 tonnes of LNG per year for the French carrier.
  • Farid Trad, VP for bunkering and energy transition, spoke at SIBCON in Singapore.
  • Trad said 'redeployment and agility' are key to the LNG transition's continued success.
  • Several 10-year agreements followed the initial 2017 contract.

CMA CGM secured 300,000 tonnes of LNG per year from TotalEnergies under the first of several 10-year supply agreements signed in 2017 — and that early commitment, the carrier says, has paid dividends.

Farid Trad, CMA CGM's VP for bunkering and energy transition, told last week's Singapore International Bunkering Conference and Exhibition (SIBCON) that the French line's decision to move early into LNG bunkering, as the industry's decarbonisation push gathered force, positioned it ahead of competitors still weighing their fuel options.

The scale is material. A 10-year deal for 300,000 tonnes annually is not a pilot programme; it is a decade-long commitment to a supply chain that barely existed when the ink dried in 2017. For context, that volume of LNG would fuel a substantial share of a major carrier's dual-fuel fleet year after year.

What did Trad actually say?

His core message, delivered at SIBCON: "redeployment and agility" are key to the continued success of the LNG transition. In plain terms, the carrier must keep flexibility in where it places its LNG-fuelled tonnage and how it adapts as fuel markets and regulation shift.

That framing carries a caveat worth noting. An early-mover advantage is only an advantage while the fuel choice remains the right one. Trad's emphasis on agility implicitly acknowledges that LNG's long-term role is not settled — if methane slip penalties tighten or alternative fuels scale faster than expected, flexibility becomes the hedge.

Why it matters for shippers and forwarders

For cargo owners tracking Scope 3 emissions, CMA CGM's LNG-backed fleet offers a lower-carbon product today rather than a promise for the 2030s. For competitors, the TotalEnergies contracts illustrate the barrier to entry: securing hundred-thousand-tonne annual supply deals takes years, and the counterparties willing to sign them are few.

For the bunkering market, the message is that demand from early movers is now locked in contractually, giving suppliers like TotalEnergies a stable base on which to build LNG infrastructure at hubs such as Singapore.

The caveat behind the dividend claim

"Paid dividends" is the carrier's own assessment, delivered on a bunkering-industry stage to an audience with a commercial stake in LNG's success. CMA CGM has not published figures isolating the cost or return of its LNG programme against conventional-fuel operations, so the dividend remains asserted rather than demonstrated.

What is on record: the 2017 starting date, the 10-year tenor, the multiple agreements that followed the first, and the 300,000-tonne annual volume from TotalEnergies.

Whether that early position compounds into lasting advantage depends on the trajectory of LNG pricing, greenhouse-gas accounting rules, and how quickly the carrier can redeploy dual-fuel tonnage as both evolve.
