Key points05
- CMA CGM officially named CMA CGM Lorenzaccio, a 15,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship.
- The vessel is part of a six-ship series named after characters from French literature.
- Lorenzaccio will deploy on the weekly Red Sea Express 2 (REX2) service connecting Asia with Djibouti, Jeddah, Ain Sokhna and Aqaba.
- Captain Predrag Vojvodic commands the vessel.
- The newbuild expands CMA CGM's methanol-capable fleet as the carrier invests in alternative marine fuels.
CMA CGM has officially named CMA CGM Lorenzaccio, its latest 15,000 TEU container ship powered by methanol dual-fuel propulsion. The naming marks another step in the Marseille-based carrier's build-out of a methanol-capable fleet, as the group continues investing in vessels designed to operate on alternative marine fuels.
The vessel is the newest unit in a series of six CMA CGM containerships that carry names drawn from characters in French literature. Lorenzaccio borrows its name from the protagonist of the play by the 19th-century French writer Alfred de Musset — a naming convention that ties the tonnage programme to the carrier's national identity.
Where will the vessel operate?
Under the command of Captain Predrag Vojvodic, CMA CGM Lorenzaccio will deploy on CMA CGM's Red Sea Express 2, or REX2, service. The weekly loop connects major Asian ports with destinations along the Red Sea corridor, calling at Djibouti, Jeddah, Ain Sokhna and Aqaba.
That routing places one of the carrier's most advanced newbuilds on a trade lane that serves Gulf, East African and Egyptian gateways rather than the headline Asia–Europe corridors where the largest dual-fuel tonnage typically debuts. Djibouti anchors the Horn of Africa; Jeddah and Aqaba serve Saudi and Jordanian demand; Ain Sokhna sits close to the Suez Canal's southern approach on the Egyptian side.
What does the ship mean for the fleet?
The addition of CMA CGM Lorenzaccio expands CMA CGM's methanol-capable fleet. Each 15,000 TEU unit of this series gives the operator flexibility to run on conventional fuel or methanol, depending on fuel availability and pricing at bunkering ports — a commercial lever as well as a decarbonisation measure.
For shippers on the REX2 loop, the deployment means weekly capacity on the Asia–Red Sea connection is now carried in part by new, large dual-fuel tonnage. For forwarders, the significance is straightforward: a modern 15,000 TEU vessel on a regional corridor signals CMA CGM's intent to keep Red Sea connections competitive while meeting tightening emissions expectations.
For the carrier itself, the naming continues a pattern: CMA CGM persists in ordering and introducing vessels built for alternative marine fuels, and Lorenzaccio is the latest tangible proof of that investment reaching operational service rather than remaining on the orderbook.
Why the naming matters
The literature series — six vessels in total — gives the dual-fuel programme a recognisable identity as the ships enter service one by one. Each naming ceremony marks the point at which tonnage moves from yard to live network, and in this case the destination network is the REX2 string.
Captain Vojvodic takes command of a ship that will be visible across the Red Sea's main container gateways on a weekly rotation, linking Asian production hubs with four discharge ports that serve distinct hinterlands.
The trajectory now points to the remaining units of the six-ship series joining the fleet as CMA CGM continues to scale its methanol-capable capacity across its network, with each newbuild adding 15,000 TEU of dual-fuel box capacity to the carrier's deployed fleet.
