Key points04
- Chemnav ordered two 158,000 dwt suezmaxes at Penglai Zhongbai Jinglu for 2029 delivery, taking its suezmax orderbook to four.
- The owner has six tankers under construction across China and South Korea, including two 50,000 dwt MRs at K Shipbuilding due 2027.
- Eastaway booked four 157,000 dwt suezmaxes at the same yard at around $80m apiece, delivering into 2030.
- Chemnav manages 17 crude and product tankers and returned to South Korean yards in 2023.
Chemnav Shipmanagement has doubled its suezmax newbuilding programme to four vessels, contracting two 158,000 dwt crude carriers at Penglai Zhongbai Jinglu Ship Industry in China for delivery in 2029. No price has surfaced for the pair — a silence worth noting, given that comparable tonnage at the same yard has just traded near $80m per ship.
Shipbroking sources linked the Paul Coronis-backed Greek owner to the contract. Chemnav's own website now confirms four suezmax newbuildings scheduled for early 2029 and early 2030, though it declines to name the yards. That reticence is standard practice, but it leaves the second pair's builder officially unverified.
What has Chemnav ordered so far?
- Two 158,000 dwt suezmaxes at Penglai Jinglu, delivering 2029 (unpriced).
- Two suezmaxes at New Times Shipbuilding, ordered quietly in September 2024, delivering in Q1 2029.
- Two 50,000 dwt MR product carriers at K Shipbuilding in South Korea, delivering 2027.
The Athens-based company, established in 2006, manages 17 crude and product tankers today and has six under construction across China and South Korea.
Why the timing invites scrutiny
The Jinglu order extends a fleet renewal that began cautiously. Chemnav returned to South Korean yards in 2023 after a long absence, ordering three MR tankers at K Shipbuilding — a programme it expanded in 2024. Its earlier suezmax experience was limited to a secondhand 2003-built vessel bought from Teekay Tankers several years ago, so four newbuilding suezmaxes mark a decisive scale-up in the crude segment rather than a continuation of past practice.
Deliveries clustered in 2029 and early 2030 mean the tonnage arrives well after the current orderbook cycle peaks. Whether that timing captures strong crude trade flows or lands into a looser suezmax market, nobody ordering today can guarantee.
What does the deal mean for the yard?
For Penglai Jinglu, the Chemnav contract reinforces its push into larger crude carriers. The yard has separately secured four 157,000 dwt suezmaxes from Eastaway, the tanker arm of Singapore-based X-Press Feeders, with deliveries stretching into 2030, at a reported $80m apiece. If Chemnav's pair prices anywhere near that benchmark, the two-ship commitment represents roughly $160m of tonnage — though, in the absence of disclosure, that figure remains an inference from the neighbour's deal, not a confirmed price.
The pattern is clear: a mid-sized Greek owner concentrating suezmax exposure in Chinese yards with 2029–2030 delivery windows, while a yard better known outside the crude segment accumulates back-to-back suezmax orders from internationally branded owners. Watch whether Chemnav confirms the yard names — and whether pricing details emerge — before reading the programme's full scale.
