Key points05
- Valerie Capers Workman becomes CHRO of C.H. Robinson effective November 16, 2026
- Outgoing CHRO Angie Freeman retires at end of 2026 after nearly 30 years at the company
- Workman previously led HR at Tesla and was CHRO at Empower Pharmacy
- The ESG function moves under Chief Legal Officer Dorothy Capers
- The appointment supports C.H. Robinson's 'Lean AI' transformation strategy under CEO Dave Bozeman
C.H. Robinson has named Valerie Capers Workman as its new Chief Human Resources Officer effective November 16, 2026, a leadership change that lands squarely in the middle of the freight forwarder's AI-driven organizational overhaul.
The appointment replaces Angie Freeman, the current Chief Human Resources & ESG Officer, who will retire at the end of 2026 after nearly three decades — a run of roughly 30 years with the Eden Prairie-based logistics giant. Workman takes over a global HR organization at a company that says it is rebuilding how work itself gets done.
The transition also redraws part of the management chart. The Environmental, Social and Governance function will move out of HR and sit under Chief Legal Officer Dorothy Capers. That shift quietly separates sustainability reporting from people strategy at a moment when both areas face rising investor scrutiny. The company offered no timetable beyond the retirement date for completing the reorganization, and it did not say whether the ESG move triggers any further structural changes.
Who is the new HR chief?
Workman brings more than 20 years of executive leadership experience across global organizations. Her résumé includes a stint as Vice President and Head of Human Resources at Tesla, the electric-vehicle maker known for aggressive, sometimes controversial workforce practices. Most recently she held the top HR job at Empower Pharmacy.
At C.H. Robinson, her remit covers leadership development, workforce capabilities, talent management and organizational effectiveness — the internal machinery a company must retool when it plans to run large parts of its operation through artificial intelligence.
The company frames her hire as a pillar of its "Lean AI" strategy, the transformation program under which C.H. Robinson is integrating AI into its business operations. The announcement stops short of detailing how AI will change headcount, role design or hiring plans, and a caveat belongs here: transformation press releases routinely promise capability-building without specifying what jobs change or disappear. This one is no exception.
What did the executives say?
President and Chief Executive Officer Dave Bozeman cast the appointment as more than a technology rollout.
"Our transformation is about more than deploying advanced technology. It's about fundamentally changing how we work, how we serve customers and how we unlock the full potential of our people," Bozeman said.
Workman echoed the pairing of technology and human expertise in her own statement.
"I'm excited to join the company at such an important time and partner with its leaders and employees to build the capabilities, culture and experiences that will help power its next phase of growth," she said.
Both statements emphasize people; neither quantifies what "unlocking potential" means in budget terms, training investment or staffing levels.
What happens to Angie Freeman's portfolio?
Freeman's career at C.H. Robinson reads unusually broad for an HR chief. Her responsibilities over the years have included Investor Relations, Marketing, Public Relations, Government Affairs, Human Resources and ESG. She has also served as President of the C.H. Robinson Foundation, the company's charitable arm.
Bozeman publicly thanked Freeman for her contributions to the company's culture, workforce strategy and organizational development — the kind of institutional knowledge that walks out the door when a 30-year veteran departs.
The two executives will work together during a transition period running from Workman's November 16 start to Freeman's year-end retirement, a window of roughly six weeks designed to preserve continuity in HR leadership. The company has not said whether any other senior departures or appointments accompany the reshuffle.
For a 3PL pushing AI deeper into freight execution, the hire signals where management believes the next constraint lies: not in algorithms, but in the workforce that operates them. Whether Workman can rebuild that workforce in under two years of CEO Bozeman's transformation push will show in C.H. Robinson's retention, hiring and productivity figures through 2027.
