Key points03
- Bunge and ABP have handled over one million metric tonnes of grains and oilseeds at the Port of Immingham since 2022.
- Storage capacity reached approximately 75,000 tonnes following the addition of Shed 36 alongside the original Shed 35.
- Immingham is the UK's largest port by tonnage volume; the Humber International Terminal is a leading deep-water bulk facility.
Bunge and Associated British Ports (ABP) have pushed more than one million metric tonnes of grains and oilseeds through their shared storage and handling operation at the Port of Immingham since the partnership launched in 2022.
The milestone lands at one of the Humber region's largest agribulk handling hubs and confirms how quickly the venture has scaled. The operation started with the commissioning of Shed 35, a purpose-built agribulk storage facility at Immingham's Humber International Terminal. Strong demand prompted a second phase: the development of Shed 36, which lifted total storage capacity to roughly 75,000 tonnes.
The commercial logic behind the arrangement is straightforward. ABP supplies the port infrastructure and deep-water handling expertise; Bunge brings its global sourcing, processing, merchandising and logistics network. The flows through the terminal run in both directions. Imports centre on essential feed ingredients, including certified sustainable PRO-S soya meal and sunflower meal. Exports comprise feed wheat, malting barley, beans and rye — a portfolio that ties UK farm output directly into international protein and grain markets.
For Bunge, the tonnage figure is not an isolated statistic. James Maw, UK Country Manager at Bunge, framed the Immingham operation as part of the company's integrated end-to-end value chains. The facility, he indicated, provides greater transparency and traceability from origin to end market while connecting UK agriculture with international customers.
Paul Litten, Head of Commercial for the Humber at ABP, called the milestone a testament to the strength of the longstanding partnership. He pointed to ABP's deep-water facilities and handling expertise as the enablers of Bunge's growth at the port.
The location does much of the heavy lifting. ABP's Port of Immingham is the UK's largest port by tonnage volume, and the Humber International Terminal ranks among the country's leading deep-water bulk handling facilities. That combination of draft, berth capacity and inland connectivity is what allows a single agribulk partnership to clear a million tonnes in under four years of operation.
For shippers in the agriculture, feed and food sectors, the significance is practical. A 75,000-tonne storage footprint at a deep-water Humber terminal gives UK growers and importers a buffer against vessel delays and market timing, letting cargo move on commercial terms rather than berth availability. For forwarders and carriers serving the bulk trades, the expansion from one shed to two signals sustained throughput growth on the Humber rather than a one-off capacity play.
Bunge and ABP say they remain committed to further growth at the facility and to meeting the evolving needs of UK growers and customers across the agriculture, feed and food sectors. With demand strong enough to trigger the Shed 36 build-out, additional capacity investment at Immingham looks the more likely trajectory than a plateau.
