Key points05

  • Asia Break Bulk secured four 12,600 dwt multipurpose heavylift newbuildings in a long-term deal with Schoeller Holdings.
  • First Octopus-type vessel delivers in October 2028; the remaining three follow after.
  • Each ship features two 250-tonne cranes with tandem lifts up to 500 tonnes and an 89 m box-shaped hold.
  • Schoeller earlier booked two 32,000 dwt MPP vessels at CSSC Huangpu Wenchong for 2029 delivery.
  • Columbia Shipmanagement will supervise construction and handle technical and crew management.

Asia Break Bulk has locked in four 12,600 dwt multipurpose heavylift newbuildings through a long-term deal with Schoeller Holdings, with the first vessel due in October 2028 and the remaining three to follow.

The Singapore-based, Hamburg-backed carrier, controlled by the COLI Group, said the Octopus-type ships are designed by China's CSSC-SDARI. Each vessel will carry two 250-tonne cranes capable of tandem lifts of up to 500 tonnes — enough muscle for the heavy project segments that increasingly define the breakbulk market.

Neither the shipbuilding yard nor the financial terms of the agreement were disclosed.

What does the tonnage actually offer shippers?

The design leans hard into oversized cargo capability. Each ship gets a single box-shaped cargo hold stretching more than 89 m, and a forward-mounted superstructure frees up extra deck space for out-of-gauge units. The vessels are ice class 1A and rated for a service speed of 15 knots, which opens northern routes and keeps schedule integrity on longer legs.

Maximilian Fischer, general manager at Asia Break Bulk, said customers are increasingly looking for shorter transit times and direct access to ports with draft restrictions — cutting out transshipments that are both costly and time-consuming.

That is the commercial pitch in one line: direct port calls where others transship.

A strategic shift from semi-liner to tramp

Asia Break Bulk, which marks its 20th anniversary this year, has traditionally run semi-liner services connecting Asia and Europe. The new tonnage changes that footprint. The company said the ships will broaden its reach through worldwide tramp operations, targeting increasingly complex project cargoes and destinations with limited port infrastructure.

For forwarders and project cargo houses, that means a larger pool of modern heavylift capacity available on a spot, voyage-by-voyage basis rather than tied to fixed loops. For competing MPP operators, it adds well-specified tonnage to a segment where crane capacity and hold dimensions decide who wins the tender.

Schoeller deepens its multipurpose bet

Cyprus-based Schoeller Holdings is backing the newbuilding programme. Columbia Shipmanagement will supervise construction and take over technical and crew management once the vessels enter service — a structure that keeps the ships inside the group's established operating chain.

The deal extends an already busy year for Schoeller in the multipurpose space. Earlier this year, the group booked two 32,000 dwt MPP vessels at China's CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding for delivery in 2029, extending a relationship with that yard dating back to 2008.

Taken together, the orders point to a sustained conviction that demand for heavylift and project tonnage — energy infrastructure, renewables components, industrial modules bound for ports with shallow drafts and thin crane coverage — justifies fresh capital even in an otherwise soft freight market.

What does this change for shippers? Not much before late 2028. But from October 2028 onward, project cargo owners gain four modern, ice-class, 500-tonne-lift vessels chasing complex destinations worldwide — and Asia Break Bulk gains the toolset to compete well beyond its Asia-Europe semi-liner roots.
